Affliction LIVE! on FSN Re-Cap

They hype that they have 5 of the Top 10 Heavyweights in the world in action tonight and then show their “Consenus Top 10 Heavyweights”
1. Fedor Emelianenko
2. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
3. Randy Couture
4. Tim Sylvia
5. Josh Barnett
6. Andrei Arlovski
7. Fabricio Werdum
8. Gabriel Gonzaga
9. Ben Rothwell
10. Aleksander Emelianenko

Jay Glazer and Frank Trigg are the announcers and they announce immediately that Aleksander Emelianenko will not be fighting due to not being licensed to fight in the States.

Heavyweight Fight- Gary Goodridge vs. Paul Buentello

They join this fight in Round 2. I’ve only seem 2 Paul Buentello fights and in one of them he got destroyed by Alistair Overeem and tapped out to strikes. Affliction is using a ring (like Pride) instead of a cage like UFC.

R2- Buentello caught Goodridge with a flurry at the end of the round but didn’t finish. Not a real exciting fight so far based on the round that they showed.

R3- Jay Glazer talks about Buentello puking before the round and says that he pukes before every fight (this is the part of MMA that I don’t need to know about). This one kind of limps to a draw. Not a good fight to introduce new fans to Affliction.

Winner: Paul Buentello by Decision (Unanimous)

Middleweight Fight- Vitor Belfort vs. Terry Martin

R1- Randy Couture is in Belfort’s corner. Pretty close fight. The first round was pretty good, definitely better than the first fight and was very even. Seemed almost dead even to me.

R2- Pretty even to start out. Terry Martin gets a take down with about 3 and a half minutes left in the round when he caught a Vitor kick. Vitor gets out without much damage. Vitor hit him with a flying knee at 2 minutes and then knocked him out about 10 seconds later. Nice finish by Vitor. Martin looked decent up until that point and Vitor looked really good.

Winner: Vitor Belfort by KO R2

Next up they have Big John McCarthy interview Vitor. Then they interview Randy Couture.

I’m not a big fan of the Glazer/Trigg tandem so far. I know that they wanted to have Mauro Ranallo but couldn’t due to his Elite XC contract. IMO (even though some people don’t like him) I think Ranallo (or someone like him) would have added a lot to the presentation and announcing. Overall, this wasn’t really a good show from the standpoint that it wouldn’t sell PPVs IMO. Belfort/Martin was a pretty good fight. They heavyweight fight wasn’t very good. Overall, I think that the show tonight will be pretty solid but this FSN portion of the show to me was not a real good intro to Affliction.
