UFC Unleashed 5/7 Re-Cap

UFC Unleashed 5/7 Re-Cap

Lightweight Fight- Clay Guida (21-4) vs. Tyson Griffin (8-1)

R1- Griffin gets him in a guillotine early but Guida eventually escapes. Griffin got Guida’s back, Guida countered with a leg lock and then they scrambled to a clinch against the cage. They exchange some nice shots as they open up and then Guida goes for a take down but it’s denied. Griffin hit a nice combo and then Guida dove in for a take down to save himself. Griffin denied the take down and they exchanged with Guida knocking down Griffin but Griffin sprawling to the top as the round ended. Real good round. Very close. I would probably give a slight, slight advantage to Griffin for Round 1.

R2- They wrestle early. Griffin gets in some shots a little after a minute in. Griffin gives Guida a back suplex but Guida lands on Griffin. Griffin has Guida’s back but not doing any damage. Guida rolls over and gets a knee bar but Griffin rolls over and is hitting shots to Guida’s back. Griffin reverses and grabs a leg lock. Guida gets out and gets Griffin’s back. Griffin face plants Guida but Guida somehow hangs on and still has Griffin’s back. Round 2 was about the same as the first but I think this one was more up in the air than the first round. Guida may have snuck this round.

R3- Griffin attacks early and hits a nice knee. Griffin really trying to take it to Guida and Guida goes in for a take down but is denied. Griffin with jabs. Guida’s take down is denied again. Guida grabbed Griffin’s back but then Griffin rolled through and they are exchanging some punches. Guida on top but struggling to get any sustained damage. Griffin is doing a good job defending from the bottom. Guida ends the fight with a couple of punches. Really close fight. Guida may have won the fight by staying on top for the last 2 minutes.

Winner: Tyson Griffin by Decision (Split)

Light Heavyweight Fight- Stephan Bonnar (12-3) vs. Forrest Griffin (12-3)

This is the re-match from the fantastic fight that they had at the Ultimate Fighter Season 1 Finale that landed both of these guys UFC contracts.

R1- Forrest is the aggressor in the first round as Bonnar seems to be fighting more out of reaction instead of aggression. Both guys land a couple of nice shots and then Griffin catches Bonnar and he falls to the ground and Griffin rushes him but they get back to their feet pretty quickly. Decent first round, pretty much a long feel out process with some good action thrown in. In my estimation Forrest took this round.

R2- This round is pretty even through the first half but Forrest seems to be moving forward more and Bonnar seems to be ducking and moving and counter punching more. Forrest has a cut on his cheek and Bonnar hits a nice combo of several punches about 3 minutes into the round. Bonnar ends the even round nicely by landing a couple of shots. This round could have gone either way, it was very close.

R3- Forrest comes out in this round with a sense of urgency. Both guys are cut but nothing bad. About 2 minutes in and the round has been really even. They clinched for the first time in the fight but Forrest missed a knee. Forrest seems to be coming on towards the end of the fight. They end the fight in the clinch.

Real solid fight. Forrest just seemed to barely get the better of Bonnar and seemed to push the pace more and be in control of the fight. Griffin wins 30-27 on all scorecards but it felt a little closer than that.

Winner: Forrest Griffin by Decision (Unanimous)
