Welterweight Fight- Diego Sanchez (23-3) vs. John Hathaway (13-0)
This is Diego's return to the welterweight division after a brief run in the lightweight division. Diego is 7-2 in the UFC welterweight division. Hathaway has a 2" height and 3" reach advantage.
R1- Diego went for an early take down but got stuffed. Hathaway caught Diego was a knee as he was coming in and floored him. Hathaway jumped on top and tried to finish but Diego recovered. Hathaway stayed on top for the rest of the round. Good start by Hathaway. Hathaway 10-9.
R2- Hathaway hit a good left jab early in the round. Diego got a take down two minutes into the round but Hathaway got back to his feet without taking any damage. Diego has blood coming from his nose. Hathaway is using his reach to his advantage. Hathaway landed some good shots in the last several seconds of the round. Hathaway 10-9, 20-18 for the fight.
R3- Sanchez landed a good left in the first minute. Sanchez went for a take down but was stuffed. Sanchez hit a good right. Diego got another take down attempt stuffed. Hathaway's nose has been busted open. Hathaway partially connected with a head kick. Diego started to stalk towards the end of the round but Hathaway got a brief take down. Close round. I'll give the third to Sanchez and the fight to Hathaway 29-28. Huge win for Hathaway and this win puts him on the map in the welterweight division.
Judges score cards: 30-27, 30-27, 30-26
Winner: John Hathaway by Decision (Unanimous)
Matt Hughes is in attendance. Yesterday he was officially inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame. He also has a fight coming up against Ricardo Almeida.
Light Heavyweight Fight- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (18-3) vs. Jason Brilz (18-2-1)
Forrest Griffin was supposed to be in this fight but he got injured so enter Jason Brilz. Brilz took the fight on four weeks notice. Lil Nog debuted in the UFC at UFC 106 and took at Luiz Cane. Nog is on a 6 fight win streak. Nog has a 3" height and 3.5" reach advantage.
R1- Nog hit some good knees and kicks early. Brilz got a take down about 90 seconds into the fight. Nog slipped out but Brilz was able to get him back down onto the mat. Nog was able to slip out the back and take Brilz back and get him down but Brilz slipped out. Nog landed a couple of punches right at the end of the round. Brilz 10-9.
R2- Brilz went for a single leg and Nog grabbed a guillotine. Brilz slipped out and took top positon. Nog reversed but Brilz grabbed a guillotine. Nog got out of the move but Brilz grabbed it again and then released it but took top position. Brilz grabbed another guillotine but Nog slipped out and got back to his feet with two minutes left. Brilz landed a good right but Nog absorbed it. Nog landed a knee. Both guys swing for the fences and Brilz landed a good shot but Nog stayed on his feet but didn't engage for the rest of the round. Brilz 20-18. This would be another big upset.
R3- Brilz got an early take down. Nog swept him over and got back to his feet. Brilz went for a take down but Nog stuffed it and went for a choke but couldn't get it. Nog hit a knee. Brilz went for a take down but Nog quickly took top position. Nog caught Brilz in a crucifix but Brilz got out and took Nog's guard. Nog swept Brilz over with 30 seconds left. Nog took this round but I've got Brilz winning 29-28.
Judges score cards: 29-28 Brilz, 29-28 Nog, 29-28 Nog
Wow that was a very shocking decision. I thought Brilz clearly won that fight and so did the fans.
Winner: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira by Decision (Split)
Heavyweight Fight- Todd Duffee (6-0) vs. Mike Russow (12-1)
Russow has won 8 straight fights with 6 of those coming by submission. Duffee debuted in the UFC at UFC 102 and promptly beat Tim Hague in 7 seconds. Duffee has a 2" height and 5" reach advantage.
R1- Duffee throwing some leather early .Duffee hit a couple of good uppercuts that hurt Russow but he survived teh onslaught. Duffee connected on a couple of overhand rights. Duffee is just dominating this fight so far. He is landing good shots and is taking his time. Duffee landed a big time left and Russow absorbed it. Duffee 10-8.

R2- Duffee continues to land some good shots. Russow is starting to land a couple of punches. Duffee landed a good right when Russow came in for a take down. The fight has slowed down in this round. Fans are eager for a knockout after two decisions so far. Duffee 10-9, 20-17 for the fight.
R3- Russow caught Duffee half way through this round with a shocking knockout. Down 20-17 on my score card and he came back and out of nowhere landed a couple

Melvin Guillard vs. Waylon Lowe (8-2)
This is from the pre-show. Lowe fought for KOTC in April of this year and beat Steve Berger by knockout in the first round.
R1- Lowe got a take down but Guillard popped back up to his feet. Melvin landed some good knees while Lowe clinched him against the cage. Melvin landed some hammer fists. Lowe went for a take down and Guillard nailed him with a knee to the body and Lowe just keeled over and this one is over. Guillard came in and gave him a shot or two before the ref stopped it but it was the knee that did Lowe in.
Winner: Melvin Guillard by TKO (Strikes) R1 3:28

Middleweight Fight- Michael Bisping (19-3) vs. Dan Miller (11-3)
Bisping last fought at UFC 110 where he lost a unanimous decision to Wanderlei Silva. Previously at UFC 105 Bisping beat Denis Kang in the 2nd round. Dan Miller is coming off of a loss to Demain Maia at UFC 109. After the referee gives them instructions they don't touch gloves and Miller gives him a little shove back to the corner.
R1- Miller hit a good left early and then kicked Bisping in the balls. Bisping landed a right hand. Both guys are landing some shots. Really even fight so far. I think Bisping takes this round because he started to land some good shots at the end of the round. Bisping 10-9.
R2- Miller is starting to throw some leg kicks. Bisping is landing jabs and has open a cut on or near Miller's nose. Bisping stuffed a take down and then landed a good right hand at the mid-way point of the round. Bisping 20-18.
R3- Miller threw a good overhand right but Bisping answered early in the last round. Miller got a take down at the half-way point in the round. Bisping quickly backed up to the wall and got to his feet. Miller landed a couple of strikes at the end. Even if you give Miller this round it's still Bisping by decision. Unless the same judges from the Brilz/Nog fight are judging this fight.

Mike Tyson and his face tatoo are at the fights tonight. So are Snoop Dogg, Larry Fitzgerald and David Spade. And is Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre.
Light Heavyweight Fight- Rampage Jackson (30-7) vs. Rashad Evans (19-1-1)
Rashad last fought at UFC 108 where he won a decision against Thiago Silva. Rampage has not fought since March of 2009 when he beat Rashad's training partner Keith Jardine by unanimous decision. The UFC tells us that Rampage lands 84% of clinch strikes, defends 77% of take downs and has the 2nd best submission defense rate in MMA history. Rashad defends 63% of take downs, has never lost a fight when landing a take down and 4 of his last wins have come by way of knockout. This should be a good fight. Despite the layoff I've got Rampage. Rashad is boo'd as he enters the Octagon. Dana White has said the winner of this gets the first shot at Shogun Rua. Rampage has a 2" height advantage but Rashad has a 2" reach advantage.
R1- Rashad hit a right hand really early that stunned Rampage. Rashad rushed in and clinched Rampage against the cage and tried for a take down. Herb Dean separates the fighters. Rashad got a take down with two minutes left in the round. Rampage got back to his feet but ate a strike on the way up. Dean separates them again with 25 seconds left in the round. Rampage landed some offense right at the end of the round. Rashad 10-9.
R2- Rashad came in and clinched Rampage early in the round to a chorus of boos. They separated and then Rashad came in and clinched again. Dean separates them again. Rashad clinches Rampage again. Neither fighter has really done anything in this round besides Rashad clinching Rampage. Rashad went for a take down and didn't get it but did land a strike or two. Rashad 20-18.
R3- Rampage caught Rashad as Rashad tried to avoid Rampage and then went to clinch him. He landed a good right that knocked Rashad off-balance and down to the mat backwards. Rampage jumped on top and landed some good strikes. Rashad held onto Rampage to try and survive and Rashad got back to his feet. Rampage gave Rashad time to recover when they got back to their feet and Rashad shot and got a take down. Rampage got back to his feet with 40 seconds left in the fight but Rashad took him down again. Rampage 10-9 but Rashad is going to take this one 29-28 by wining a 2nd round in which both guys really did nothing. Unfortunately this fight didn't live up to the hype and even though Rashad won I have a hard time thinking he's deserving of a shot at Shogun after two decision victories.

Lightweight Fight- Melvin Guillard (41-9-3) vs. Ronys Torres (18-1)
This is the UFC debut of Torres. Guillard was last seen being choked out by Nate Diaz in the second round at UFC Fight Night 19. Guillard is training with Greg Jackson’s camp.
R1- Torres got a quick take down but Melvin was able to get back to his feet. Torres got another take down just a minute and a half into the fight but Melvin was able to turn him over and then get back to his feet. Torres ate a knee coming in for a take down but was still able to complete the take down. Torres 10-9.
I between rounds one of the corners knocked over a bucket of ice in the corner.
“This is the God Damn Three Stooges. What are you freaks doing….Get back in there. You’re not done. There’s ice all over the floor….Those corner men. Someone needs to kick their ass.”- Joe Rogan
R2- Guillard did a good job avoiding a take down and then hit a good combo about half way through the round. Torres took Guillard’s back standing up and Guillard rolled thru and Torres took Guillard’s arm and tried for a kimura but had to let it go. This was a close round. Torres 20-18.
R3- Guillard landed some strikes at the beginning of this round. Torres got a single leg take down two minutes into the round. Guillard got back to his feet but Torres took him down again with one minute left in the round. Torres got a slam and Melvin flipped him over and got some Ground and Pound as the round ended. This was another close round. I’ve got Torres winning the fight 29-28.
Judges score cards: 29-28 on all three cards for Melvin Guillard.

Lightweight Fight- Mac Danzig (19-7-1) vs. Justin Buchholz (9-4)
Buchholz has a 4” height and 3” reach advantage. Danzig’s last fight was a decision loss to Jim Miller at UFC 100. Buchholz is training with Urijah Faber. Danzig has Gray Maynard in his corner.
R1- Buchholz knocked Danzig down with a punch about mid-way through the round but Danzig recovered. Close round as Danzig won the beginning and end but Buchholz took the middle. Buchholz 10-9.

R3- Danzig got a quick take down but Buchholz quickly got back to his feet. Danzig tried a throw but ended up on his back. Fighters to their feet with two minutes left and Danzig landed some decent shots. Danzig got a take down and took his back and then mounted. Danzig finished the round strong and will take this fight 29-28.

UFC Fight Night 19 (9/16/09) Re-Cap

No Joe Rogan tonight so Kenny Florian will be replacing him on Color Commentary. Gray Maynard will take a big step tonight towards a Lightweight Title Fight if he can beat Roger Huerta. This is a risky fight for the UFC as Huerta plans on going Hollywood after the fight. Former WEC Champion Carlos Condit tries to get his first UFC win after a razor think loss to Martin Kampmann in his debut. TUF fighters fight it out tonight as Nate Diaz/Melvin Guillard and Nate Quarry/Tim Credeur collide. Hopefully Steve Cantwell/Brian Stann will make the main show and/or we can see Brock Larson/Mike Pierce. Phillipe Nover was pulled from his undercard fight with Sam Stout tonight when he suffered a seizure.
Middleweight Fight- Nate Quarry (17-3) vs. Tim Credeur (13-4)
Credeur is coming off a second round guillotine submission of Nick Catone at Fight Night 18. Credeur is 3-0 in the UFC and has really improved since his TUF days. Credeur has a 3” height and 2.5” reach advantage. Quarry has to be the favorite coming into this fight. Quarry’s only losses in the UFC have come to Rich Franklin and Demain Maia.
R1- Credeur is out striking Quarry early but doesn’t seem to be hurting him. Credeur caught Quarry with a solid left hand at the 1:20 mark and Quarry went down. Credeur jumped on top and grabbed a Rear Naked Choke with over a minute left in the round but Quarry rolled over and survived. Really great action. Credeur closed the round with some strikes and has bloodied Quarry’s nose. Impressive first round for Credeur as he’s up 10-9.
R2- Credeur opens up the round with strikes and has Quarry on the run early but he got popped by Quarry. Both guys go toe to toe swinging for the fences and Credeur went down. Credeur definitely doesn’t want to get into a shot for shot against Quarry. Quarry lands on top of Credeur and takes his guard. Quarry has done a good job of weathering the storm so far and turned the tide quickly in this round to tie it up 19-19 going into the third and final round.
R3- Credeur opens up this round landing some good strikes but Quarry unloaded on Credeur with a huge right hand. The punch looked so violent that Herb Dean rushed in and almost stopped the fight but Credeur was able to survive the strike. Quarry took Credeur’s guard. They get back to their feet but Credeur looks like he’s still really feeling the effects of that one punch. Credeur is taking some big shots and finally goes down with Quarry following him and taking his guard. Quarry takes this round and will take the fight 29-28. Good fight, Credeur showed a lot of heart but Quarry was just too big and too strong for him. Quarry finished the fight with a big mouse under his right eye.
Judges score cards say: 29-28, 29-27 and 29-28 in favor of Quarry
Winner: Nate Quarry by Decision (Unanimous)
Welterweight Fight- Carlos Condit (23-5) vs. Jake Ellenberger (21-4)
This is Jake Ellenberger’s debut in the UFC as he is filling in for the injured Chris Lytle. Condit is a former WEC Welterweight Champion who lost in his debut to Martin Kampmann in a very close split decision. Condit has a 2” height and 3” reach advantage.
R1- Ellenberger grabbed a Condit kick early and punched him and took him down. Condit does a really good job in his guard and got back to his feet without taking any damage. Ellenberger again counters a kick with a punch and just drills Condit up against the cage and Condit goes down. Ellenberger jumps on top and Condit is in deep trouble. Ellenberger went for a choke but Condit was able to escape and get back to his feet. Condit hit Ellenberger with a big knee to the chin. Ellenberger absorbed two more knees and then fired a Hail Mary punch and looked like he grazed Condit right in the temple and Condit just crumpled. I thought for sure that was the end of the fight as Ellenberger jumped on top and reigned punches to the back of Condit’s head but Condit took Ellenberger down and took half guard. There is still two minutes left in this fight and so far it has been CRAZY. Condit was able to move to mount but Ellenberger kicked him off. Ellenberger grabbed a guillotine but Condit rolled out and ended up with Ellenberger in his guard. Condit has a very active guard and is hitting some elbows. Condit went for a triangle but Ellenberger slipped out quickly before it was even close and they stood back up. Ellenberger landed a head kick but it looked like it was just a glancing blow. Holy Crap, what a first round. Ellenberger is no joke and I can’t believe that Condit survived that first round. Condit clearly has to get this fight on the ground if he wants to win. You have to give that first round to Ellenberger 10-9.
R2- Ellenberger is swinging for the fences early but missed two big haymakers. Ellenberger got a double leg take down. Condit landed some elbows. Ellenberger is getting very little offense in despite being in an advantageous position. Condit got a kimura but could not submit Ellenberger because Ellenberger was holding onto the fence. Condit did however roll over Ellenberger and took mount. Condit was able to get in some shots but was moved to half guard. Condit re-mounts and tries to take Ellenberger’s back but he slips and Ellenberger takes his guard. Condit once again is active from his guard and Ellenberger is not really trying to improve his position. Back to their feet with 15 seconds left. Condit landed a couple of strikes before the land ended. Ellenberger got a take down and laid on top of Condit for a while but really didn’t get in any offense in this round. Condit had a near submission and was able to mount and score points from his guard. I think that’s enough as Condit controlled the striking and landed many more shots in this round than did Ellenberger. It will be interesting to see how judges score this round and I think many will give it to Ellenberger just for kind of laying on Condit and getting the take down. I’ve got it Condit 10-9 and that evens up the fight 19-19 on my score card.
R3- Condit threw a leg kick early but it was mostly deflected. Ellenberger got an early take down. Condit again worked strikes from the guard position. Ellenberger landed a big elbow but shortly thereafter Condit was able to slide out of his grasp and they stood back up with three and a half minutes remaining in the fight. Ellenberger threw a kick but it landed on Condit’s arm. Condit got a take down and Ellenberger grabbed a guillotine but Condit easily slipped out and moved to half guard. Condit controlled from the top and landed some good strikes. Condit went to take Ellenberger’s back and landed some more good strikes. Ellenberger spins out as Condit went for a submission and took Condit’s guard. Condit kicked him off and they stood back up. Ellenberger went for a single leg but Condit. The ref keeps warning Condit for striking to the back of Ellenberger’s head but I haven’t seen it as Carlos is not hitting him directly to the back of his head. Condit stuffed the take down and took Ellenberger’s back and flattened him out and continued to land strikes. I’ve got Condit taking this round 10-9 which gives him the fight 29-28 in a really good fight. I don’t know how Condit survived the first round but he really weathered that storm and wore out Ellenberger. It will be interesting to see how judges score this fight.

So that’s 2 split decisions in his first two fights for Condit in the UFC. Ellenberger looked very game in the first round.

Gray Maynard (8-0) vs. Roger Huerta (22-2-1)
Huerta is coming off of a lackluster loss to Kenny Florian by decision (30-27) back at UFC 87. Gray Maynard is coming off an impressive win over Jim Miller at UFC 96. Maynard is undefeated and is quickly moving up the Lightweight ladder. With another impressive win or two he could find himself as the #1 Contender to B.J. Penn. Huerta could be taking off to Hollywood after this fight so it will be interesting to see how prepared he is for this fight.
R1- Maynard came in at early and landed some good strikes. Huerta came in and Maynard landed a good counter punch that knocked Huerta off center. Maynard looks really quick so far early in this fight. Huerta got Maynard up against the fence and was able to land several strikes. Maynard was able to retreat and when Huerta came in again Maynard was able to pop him with a jab. Maynard went for a single leg but Huerta was able to sprawl out of the take down. Good first round that was pretty even. Huerta had the one flurry but overall Maynard landed more strikes and controlled more of the round. Maynard 10-9 after one round. Florian gave this round to Huerta.
R2- Maynard countered a Huerta kick with a good right hand and Huerta ducked and moved and slid in the Octagon to gain his balance and avoid Maynard. Maynard hit a good right that knocked Huerta off-balance and then Maynard landed another left but it appeared to just be a glancing blow. Huerta charged at Maynard and threw like 7 or 8 shots but Maynard ducked all of them and then Maynard landed a jab that took Huerta briefly off his feet as he lost his balance. Maynard is far from dominating this fight but he’s doing enough to win the rounds. I’ve got Maynard up 20-18 on my score card.
R3- Maynard landed a couple of strikes early. Maynard rushed in and took Huerta down. Huerta got back to his feet briefly but Maynard pulled him back down. Maynard’s nose is bleeding from a shot earlier in the fight. Maynard has a funky looking kimura locked in on Huerta and Maynard eventually let it go as Huerta was not going to tap and was able to twist out of the move. Huerta was briefly on top but then Maynard was able to grind him back down. Maynard takes this round and I’ve got him winning 30-27 on my score card. It was a close fight but I had Maynard winning all of the rounds. The only one that really seemed debatable was the first round. Maynard needs another quality win and then he could be a contender for the Lightweight Title.

Lightweight Fight- Nate Diaz (10-4) vs. Melvin Guillard (41-8-3)
In his last fight Melvin won a Split Decision over Gleison Tibau at the Ultimate Fight 9 Finale. I actually had the fight scored in favor of Tibau 29-28. On the same show Nate lost a close fight to Joe Stevenson by 29-28 decision on all score cards. Diaz has a 5” reach and 3” height advantage.
R1- Diaz threw a loopy right hand and Guillard stuck him with a quick right that knocked him down but Guillard let him back up. Diaz locked him up and got a take down but Guillard got back to his feet and hit Diaz with a judo throw and then let Diaz back to his feet. Diaz again got Guillard down but Guillard again quickly got to his feet without taking any damage. Diaz has some blood coming from near his eye. Fairly close round but Diaz really didn’t do anything to hurt Guillard and Guillard opened up a cut on Diaz and knocked him down early in the round. I’ve got Guillard taking a close round 10 to 9.
R2- Guillard went for another judo throw and was able to get Diaz down on the mat but he let Diaz back to his feet. Diaz is starting to land some strikes. Guillard fakes being hurt but then gets caught by Diaz as Diaz pulled guard and locked in a choke and Guillard submitted. What a huge mistake by Guillard and Diaz capitalized beautifully.

No Joe Rogan tonight so Kenny Florian will be replacing him on Color Commentary. Gray Maynard will take a big step tonight towards a Lightweight Title Fight if he can beat Roger Huerta. This is a risky fight for the UFC as Huerta plans on going Hollywood after the fight. Former WEC Champion Carlos Condit tries to get his first UFC win after a razor think loss to Martin Kampmann in his debut. TUF fighters fight it out tonight as Nate Diaz/Melvin Guillard and Nate Quarry/Tim Credeur collide. Hopefully Steve Cantwell/Brian Stann will make the main show and/or we can see Brock Larson/Mike Pierce. Phillipe Nover was pulled from his undercard fight with Sam Stout tonight when he suffered a seizure.
Middleweight Fight- Nate Quarry (17-3) vs. Tim Credeur (13-4)
Credeur is coming off a second round guillotine submission of Nick Catone at Fight Night 18. Credeur is 3-0 in the UFC and has really improved since his TUF days. Credeur has a 3” height and 2.5” reach advantage. Quarry has to be the favorite coming into this fight. Quarry’s only losses in the UFC have come to Rich Franklin and Demain Maia.
R1- Credeur is out striking Quarry early but doesn’t seem to be hurting him. Credeur caught Quarry with a solid left hand at the 1:20 mark and Quarry went down. Credeur jumped on top and grabbed a Rear Naked Choke with over a minute left in the round but Quarry rolled over and survived. Really great action. Credeur closed the round with some strikes and has bloodied Quarry’s nose. Impressive first round for Credeur as he’s up 10-9.
R2- Credeur opens up the round with strikes and has Quarry on the run early but he got popped by Quarry. Both guys go toe to toe swinging for the fences and Credeur went down. Credeur definitely doesn’t want to get into a shot for shot against Quarry. Quarry lands on top of Credeur and takes his guard. Quarry has done a good job of weathering the storm so far and turned the tide quickly in this round to tie it up 19-19 going into the third and final round.
R3- Credeur opens up this round landing some good strikes but Quarry unloaded on Credeur with a huge right hand. The punch looked so violent that Herb Dean rushed in and almost stopped the fight but Credeur was able to survive the strike. Quarry took Credeur’s guard. They get back to their feet but Credeur looks like he’s still really feeling the effects of that one punch. Credeur is taking some big shots and finally goes down with Quarry following him and taking his guard. Quarry takes this round and will take the fight 29-28. Good fight, Credeur showed a lot of heart but Quarry was just too big and too strong for him. Quarry finished the fight with a big mouse under his right eye.
Judges score cards say: 29-28, 29-27 and 29-28 in favor of Quarry
Winner: Nate Quarry by Decision (Unanimous)
Welterweight Fight- Carlos Condit (23-5) vs. Jake Ellenberger (21-4)
This is Jake Ellenberger’s debut in the UFC as he is filling in for the injured Chris Lytle. Condit is a former WEC Welterweight Champion who lost in his debut to Martin Kampmann in a very close split decision. Condit has a 2” height and 3” reach advantage.
R1- Ellenberger grabbed a Condit kick early and punched him and took him down. Condit does a really good job in his guard and got back to his feet without taking any damage. Ellenberger again counters a kick with a punch and just drills Condit up against the cage and Condit goes down. Ellenberger jumps on top and Condit is in deep trouble. Ellenberger went for a choke but Condit was able to escape and get back to his feet. Condit hit Ellenberger with a big knee to the chin. Ellenberger absorbed two more knees and then fired a Hail Mary punch and looked like he grazed Condit right in the temple and Condit just crumpled. I thought for sure that was the end of the fight as Ellenberger jumped on top and reigned punches to the back of Condit’s head but Condit took Ellenberger down and took half guard. There is still two minutes left in this fight and so far it has been CRAZY. Condit was able to move to mount but Ellenberger kicked him off. Ellenberger grabbed a guillotine but Condit rolled out and ended up with Ellenberger in his guard. Condit has a very active guard and is hitting some elbows. Condit went for a triangle but Ellenberger slipped out quickly before it was even close and they stood back up. Ellenberger landed a head kick but it looked like it was just a glancing blow. Holy Crap, what a first round. Ellenberger is no joke and I can’t believe that Condit survived that first round. Condit clearly has to get this fight on the ground if he wants to win. You have to give that first round to Ellenberger 10-9.
R2- Ellenberger is swinging for the fences early but missed two big haymakers. Ellenberger got a double leg take down. Condit landed some elbows. Ellenberger is getting very little offense in despite being in an advantageous position. Condit got a kimura but could not submit Ellenberger because Ellenberger was holding onto the fence. Condit did however roll over Ellenberger and took mount. Condit was able to get in some shots but was moved to half guard. Condit re-mounts and tries to take Ellenberger’s back but he slips and Ellenberger takes his guard. Condit once again is active from his guard and Ellenberger is not really trying to improve his position. Back to their feet with 15 seconds left. Condit landed a couple of strikes before the land ended. Ellenberger got a take down and laid on top of Condit for a while but really didn’t get in any offense in this round. Condit had a near submission and was able to mount and score points from his guard. I think that’s enough as Condit controlled the striking and landed many more shots in this round than did Ellenberger. It will be interesting to see how judges score this round and I think many will give it to Ellenberger just for kind of laying on Condit and getting the take down. I’ve got it Condit 10-9 and that evens up the fight 19-19 on my score card.
R3- Condit threw a leg kick early but it was mostly deflected. Ellenberger got an early take down. Condit again worked strikes from the guard position. Ellenberger landed a big elbow but shortly thereafter Condit was able to slide out of his grasp and they stood back up with three and a half minutes remaining in the fight. Ellenberger threw a kick but it landed on Condit’s arm. Condit got a take down and Ellenberger grabbed a guillotine but Condit easily slipped out and moved to half guard. Condit controlled from the top and landed some good strikes. Condit went to take Ellenberger’s back and landed some more good strikes. Ellenberger spins out as Condit went for a submission and took Condit’s guard. Condit kicked him off and they stood back up. Ellenberger went for a single leg but Condit. The ref keeps warning Condit for striking to the back of Ellenberger’s head but I haven’t seen it as Carlos is not hitting him directly to the back of his head. Condit stuffed the take down and took Ellenberger’s back and flattened him out and continued to land strikes. I’ve got Condit taking this round 10-9 which gives him the fight 29-28 in a really good fight. I don’t know how Condit survived the first round but he really weathered that storm and wore out Ellenberger. It will be interesting to see how judges score this fight.

So that’s 2 split decisions in his first two fights for Condit in the UFC. Ellenberger looked very game in the first round.

Gray Maynard (8-0) vs. Roger Huerta (22-2-1)
Huerta is coming off of a lackluster loss to Kenny Florian by decision (30-27) back at UFC 87. Gray Maynard is coming off an impressive win over Jim Miller at UFC 96. Maynard is undefeated and is quickly moving up the Lightweight ladder. With another impressive win or two he could find himself as the #1 Contender to B.J. Penn. Huerta could be taking off to Hollywood after this fight so it will be interesting to see how prepared he is for this fight.
R1- Maynard came in at early and landed some good strikes. Huerta came in and Maynard landed a good counter punch that knocked Huerta off center. Maynard looks really quick so far early in this fight. Huerta got Maynard up against the fence and was able to land several strikes. Maynard was able to retreat and when Huerta came in again Maynard was able to pop him with a jab. Maynard went for a single leg but Huerta was able to sprawl out of the take down. Good first round that was pretty even. Huerta had the one flurry but overall Maynard landed more strikes and controlled more of the round. Maynard 10-9 after one round. Florian gave this round to Huerta.
R2- Maynard countered a Huerta kick with a good right hand and Huerta ducked and moved and slid in the Octagon to gain his balance and avoid Maynard. Maynard hit a good right that knocked Huerta off-balance and then Maynard landed another left but it appeared to just be a glancing blow. Huerta charged at Maynard and threw like 7 or 8 shots but Maynard ducked all of them and then Maynard landed a jab that took Huerta briefly off his feet as he lost his balance. Maynard is far from dominating this fight but he’s doing enough to win the rounds. I’ve got Maynard up 20-18 on my score card.
R3- Maynard landed a couple of strikes early. Maynard rushed in and took Huerta down. Huerta got back to his feet briefly but Maynard pulled him back down. Maynard’s nose is bleeding from a shot earlier in the fight. Maynard has a funky looking kimura locked in on Huerta and Maynard eventually let it go as Huerta was not going to tap and was able to twist out of the move. Huerta was briefly on top but then Maynard was able to grind him back down. Maynard takes this round and I’ve got him winning 30-27 on my score card. It was a close fight but I had Maynard winning all of the rounds. The only one that really seemed debatable was the first round. Maynard needs another quality win and then he could be a contender for the Lightweight Title.

Welterweight Fight- Brad Blackburn (14-9-1) vs. Edgar Garcia (7-0)
Blackburn is a former IFL fighter who is 2-0 in the UFC. This is Garcia’s debut in the UFC but has fought for WEC.
R1- Blackburn hits some nice strikes early grabs a guillotine. Garcia slams Blackburn hard but he jumps right back up. Garcia seems to be finding his range as the round goes on. This was a pretty even round, really close to a 10-10.
R2- Blackburn seems like he’s landing more strikes as he’s hitting leg strikes and Garcia is not attempting anything but punches. Another close round that I gave to Blackburn.
R3- Very even but uneventful fight. Blackburn got a take down at the end of the round but then got nailed with a left hand and went down and popped back up. I honestly think this should be a draw, 29-29.
Judges score the fight: 29-28 Garcia, 29-28 Blackburn, 29-28 Blackburn.
Winner: Brad Blackburn by Decision (Split)
Lightweight Fight- Jason Dent (18-10) vs. Cameron Dollar (5-2)
Both of these fighters were participants on Season 9 of TUF. Dollar got some crazy butterfly tattoos put on his chest since the season ended.
R1- Dent is throwing more strikes early and is landing some decent shots. Cameron got him up against the fence and landed some nice strikes. Dollar went for a take down and Dent grabbed an Anaconda Choke and Dollar eventually tapped. Dollar dominated this fight and Dent did nothing until the finish.
Winner: Jason Dent by Submission (Anaconda Choke) R1 4:46
Lightweight Fight- Melvin Guillard (40-8-3) vs. Gleison Tibau (29-5)
R1- Not a lot of action in this round but Tibau got a couple of take downs which will swing the round in his favor.
R2- Melvin had the advantage in the stand-up in this round and even got a take down. This is a very even fight that I’ve got 19-19 so far. When Gleison’s gotten take downs he hasn’t done anything with them.
R3- Melvin started this round with a couple of strikes and Gleison answered and got a take down. Tibau controlled on the ground until about a minute and a half left in the round. Tibau got another take down at the one minute mark and ends the fight with some Ground and Pound from the mount position.
I’ve got Tibau winning this 29-28. Tibau clearly took round three. The other two rounds were very close.

Nick has a 6” reach and 3” height advantage. This is the official first UFC fight for both of these TUF fighters.
R1- Nick grabbed a kick and took Frank down early. Nick was just the better fighter in there and won by Rear Naked Choke. Lester was trying to muscle through the fight and he just didn’t get it done.
Winner: Nick Osipczak by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) R1 3:40
Catchweight Fight- Mike Ciesnolevicz (18-3) vs. Tomasz Drwal (15-2)
Ciesnolevicz weighed in at 208 lbs thus making this a catchweight fight instead of a Light Heavyweight Fight.
R1- Drwal landed some good strikes in a clinch against the cage about half way through the round and also landed some nice strikes after a stand up with about a minute and a half left in the round. Drwal landed a big time knee that dropped Mike and then he hit some Ground and Pound for the TKO victory.

Retro Re-Cap: The Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale 11/5/05
UFC: Ultimate Fighter 2 Finale 11/5/05
Heavyweight Fight- Keith Jardine vs. Kerry Schall
R1- Jardine just kind of picks his spots early and lands some good shots. Schall looks to be heavy. This is jus pretty much a straight stand up fight. Jardine wins the round and bloodies Schall’s nose.
R2- Not a very exciting fight so far through a round and a half. Jardine just picked apart Schall with leg kicks until he finally chopped him down like a tree and fight was ended.
Winner: Keith Jardine by TKO (leg kicks) R2 3:28
Welterweight Fight- Marcus Davis vs. Melvin Guillard
This should be a fun fight.
R1- Guillard charges about a minute in and hits several good punches and then takes Davis down. Melvin got in a couple of good shots and then grabbed a guillotine on Marcus. Davis pops his head out after about a minute and is now in Davis’s guard. Melvin gets another take down with about 30 seconds left in the round and gets side control. Melvin takes round one 10 to 9.
R2- Melvin got another take down (that’s three so far) about one minute into the round. Melvin opened up a big cut on Marcus and the ref stops the ref to check the cut. Melvin caught him with an elbow above the eye and the doctor stops the fight.
Winner: Melvin Guillard by Ref Stoppage (Cut) R2 2:55
Welterweight Fight- Josh Burkman vs. Sam Morgan
R1- Burkman gets a quick take down and immediately beats Morgan. Wow. Burkman took him down and then just nailed him with a couple of shots that knocked Morgan out. It looked like when Burkman drove him into the mat the impact might have knocked Morgan out.
Winner: Josh Burkman by TKO (strikes) R1 0:21
Welterweight Fight- Kenny Florian vs. Kit Cope
Kit Cope is a Muy Thai fighter.
R1- Florian immediately clinches with him. Good action early as they clinch and battle. Florian caught a right hand going in for a take down but managed to clinch with Cope. Florian struggled but finally got a take down. Florian mounted but was quickly moved by Cope to full guard. Cope got to his feet but got taken down again. Florian took a mount and got lots of punches in. Florian then grabbed an arm bar but the bell rang before Cope would give up. Cope tapped but it was after the bell.
R2- Florian gets a quick take down and takes Cope’s back and quickly put on Rear Naked Choke and Cope tapped out again. Florian looked great in this fight.
Winner: Kenny Florian by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) R2 0:37
TUF Welterweight Finals Fight- Joe Stevenson vs. Luke Cuomo
Cuomo has a 5 inch height advantage and 4 inch reach advantage. When asked if the fighters have any questions Stevenson says “Luke I am your father.”
R1- Stevenson gets this fight to the ground within the first 30 seconds. Stevenson grabs an arm triangle but Luke gets out of it and moves Joe to full guard and then escaped back to his feet. Joe gets another take down half way through the round. Joe takes side control and lands some good elbows. Joe gets a bunch of elbows in on Luke and the fight was in danger of being stopped but Luke lasted until the bell range. Stevenson easily took round one.
R2- Luke hit a good clean right hand to start the round but Stevenson quickly recovered and good the take down. Stevenson went for an arm bar but Luke escaped. The exchanged some shots standing and then Luke got a take down but Joe grabbed Luke’s leg and moved to the top position. Joe hits some good elbows from the top. This was a close round and goes to Stevenson so he’s up 20-18. Good fight so far.
R3- Luke got in a punch to start the round and then Joe went for a take down but Luke reversed it on him. Luke’s conditioning is helping him out in this part of the fight. Luke got some shots in on Stevenson. Stevenson got up and quickly took down Luke. Luke went for a triangle but couldn’t get it. Joe went for a leg lock but abandoned it. They briefly got separated and Joe got in a slam to take Luke back down. This was a real good fight. I think Luke took round 3 but I’ve got Joe 29-28 for the fight.
Judges score the fight: 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28 in favor of Stevenson
TUF 2 Welterweight Winner: Joe Stevenson by Decision (Unanimous)
TUF Heavyweight Finals Fight- Rashad Evans vs. Brad Imes
Imes has a huge 8 inch height advantage and a huge 6 inch reach advantage. Look for Rashad to take him to the mat quickly.
R1- Brad hit a couple of jabs early and then grabbed a Muy Thai clinch and tried some knees. Rashad answered with a good right and Imes again grabbed a clinch. Brad got a take down a little over a minute into the fight but couldn’t do anything with it. Brad hit a good elbow and then a left hand. Rashad came back with 3 punches but Brad keeps coming at Rashad. Rashad hit two big right hands and Brad tried to clinch but Rashad kept firing and knocked Brad down. Rashad jumped on top to try and finish but Brad hung in there. Rashad passed the guard but Brad rolled over to his knees and got to his feet. Brad is cut from those punches. This was a good first round. Brad was winning until Rashad hit that series of punches that knocked Brad down and almost finished him. Rashad 10-9 after one round.
R2- Even start to the round. Rashad starts to get the distance on his jab. Brad comes up with some good shots and tied to finish Rashad but Rashad weathered the storm and never left his feet. Brad got Rashad up against the fence and swung at him a bunch of times but Rashad showed good head movement and ducked the onslaught. Rashad got off the fence and hit some jabs. Both guys are really winded with about a minute and a half to go in the round. Rashad stuck Brad with two right hands. Rashad hit another right but Brad came back at the end of the round with some shots. Really good round. I think Brad took this round but it was close. I’ve got 19-19 after two rounds. Good fight so far.
R3- Rashad connects with some shots early in the round. Rashad caught Brad leaning in and nailed him with a left hand that staggered and then dropped Brad. Rashad jumps on top for the finish but Brad tries to wrap him up. Brad gets to his feet and tries to get some shots in on Rashad. Brad clinches and then gets a take down and gets half guard. Rashad got back to his feet after some elbows. 90 seconds left in the round. Both guys are really tired. They swing at the end but both guys are too tired to do any damage. Really close round and really close fight. I’ve got Rashad with a close victory 29-28. Good fight.

TUF 2 Heavyweight Winner: Rashad Evans by Decision (Split)
Welterweight Fight- Diego Sanchez vs. Nick Diaz
They meet heads during the meeting at the beginning of the fight and John McCarthy pushes Diaz back to his corner. Looks like a lot of bad blood is brewing between these two guys.
R1- Diego quickly takes Nick’s back. Diaz spins around and Diego is in his guard but Diaz is very active. Diego lands some pretty decent shots but Diaz remains pretty active which is making him hard to hit. Nick reverses and gets Diego in side control but Diego quickly reverses back. Diego is surprisingly controlling Diaz on the ground. Diego looked really good in this round. Sanchez 10-9 in the first round.
R2- Diaz slips really early but luckily it doesn’t hurt him. Diego gets a quick take down within the first 30 seconds of the round. Diego picks Nick up and slams him down and then gets some shots in on Nick. Diego moved Nick up against the cage and got some good Ground and Pound in on him. Diaz reversed a mount and got in Diego’s guard but Diego got out of it before the end of the round. Diaz has a cut near his eye. Diego got another take down at the end of the round. Sanchez is up 20-18 after two rounds.
R3- Diaz starts out the round with a left hand and a jab. Nick is doing a good job at the start of the round avoiding take downs and hitting jabs but Diego gets a take down within the first minute of the round. Diego is bleeding and it’s dripping onto Diaz as Diego is in his guard. They got back to their feet but Diego quickly took Nick’s back. Diaz looks like he’s bleeding now. There is a good amount of blood flowing and it’s tough to see exactly who it is coming from. Diaz gets a take down with about two and a half minutes left. Both guys look to be cut badly. Diaz is on top but Diego grabs an arm bar. Diaz frees himself from the move. Diego slips out and they roll around a little bit and Diego ends up in Nick’s guard. This was a close round, probably went to Diaz. I’ve got Sanchez winning 29-28. Really good fight.
Judges score the fight 30-27 in favor of Sanchez.

This was a very enjoyable show with some good fights- Sanchez/Diaz, Imes/Evans, Stevenson/Cuomo and it also had some good performances from Florian, Jardine and Guillard.
Heavyweight Fight- Keith Jardine vs. Kerry Schall
R1- Jardine just kind of picks his spots early and lands some good shots. Schall looks to be heavy. This is jus pretty much a straight stand up fight. Jardine wins the round and bloodies Schall’s nose.
R2- Not a very exciting fight so far through a round and a half. Jardine just picked apart Schall with leg kicks until he finally chopped him down like a tree and fight was ended.
Winner: Keith Jardine by TKO (leg kicks) R2 3:28
Welterweight Fight- Marcus Davis vs. Melvin Guillard
This should be a fun fight.
R1- Guillard charges about a minute in and hits several good punches and then takes Davis down. Melvin got in a couple of good shots and then grabbed a guillotine on Marcus. Davis pops his head out after about a minute and is now in Davis’s guard. Melvin gets another take down with about 30 seconds left in the round and gets side control. Melvin takes round one 10 to 9.
R2- Melvin got another take down (that’s three so far) about one minute into the round. Melvin opened up a big cut on Marcus and the ref stops the ref to check the cut. Melvin caught him with an elbow above the eye and the doctor stops the fight.
Winner: Melvin Guillard by Ref Stoppage (Cut) R2 2:55
Welterweight Fight- Josh Burkman vs. Sam Morgan
R1- Burkman gets a quick take down and immediately beats Morgan. Wow. Burkman took him down and then just nailed him with a couple of shots that knocked Morgan out. It looked like when Burkman drove him into the mat the impact might have knocked Morgan out.
Winner: Josh Burkman by TKO (strikes) R1 0:21
Welterweight Fight- Kenny Florian vs. Kit Cope
Kit Cope is a Muy Thai fighter.
R1- Florian immediately clinches with him. Good action early as they clinch and battle. Florian caught a right hand going in for a take down but managed to clinch with Cope. Florian struggled but finally got a take down. Florian mounted but was quickly moved by Cope to full guard. Cope got to his feet but got taken down again. Florian took a mount and got lots of punches in. Florian then grabbed an arm bar but the bell rang before Cope would give up. Cope tapped but it was after the bell.
R2- Florian gets a quick take down and takes Cope’s back and quickly put on Rear Naked Choke and Cope tapped out again. Florian looked great in this fight.
Winner: Kenny Florian by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) R2 0:37
TUF Welterweight Finals Fight- Joe Stevenson vs. Luke Cuomo
Cuomo has a 5 inch height advantage and 4 inch reach advantage. When asked if the fighters have any questions Stevenson says “Luke I am your father.”
R1- Stevenson gets this fight to the ground within the first 30 seconds. Stevenson grabs an arm triangle but Luke gets out of it and moves Joe to full guard and then escaped back to his feet. Joe gets another take down half way through the round. Joe takes side control and lands some good elbows. Joe gets a bunch of elbows in on Luke and the fight was in danger of being stopped but Luke lasted until the bell range. Stevenson easily took round one.
R2- Luke hit a good clean right hand to start the round but Stevenson quickly recovered and good the take down. Stevenson went for an arm bar but Luke escaped. The exchanged some shots standing and then Luke got a take down but Joe grabbed Luke’s leg and moved to the top position. Joe hits some good elbows from the top. This was a close round and goes to Stevenson so he’s up 20-18. Good fight so far.
R3- Luke got in a punch to start the round and then Joe went for a take down but Luke reversed it on him. Luke’s conditioning is helping him out in this part of the fight. Luke got some shots in on Stevenson. Stevenson got up and quickly took down Luke. Luke went for a triangle but couldn’t get it. Joe went for a leg lock but abandoned it. They briefly got separated and Joe got in a slam to take Luke back down. This was a real good fight. I think Luke took round 3 but I’ve got Joe 29-28 for the fight.
Judges score the fight: 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28 in favor of Stevenson
TUF 2 Welterweight Winner: Joe Stevenson by Decision (Unanimous)
TUF Heavyweight Finals Fight- Rashad Evans vs. Brad Imes
Imes has a huge 8 inch height advantage and a huge 6 inch reach advantage. Look for Rashad to take him to the mat quickly.
R1- Brad hit a couple of jabs early and then grabbed a Muy Thai clinch and tried some knees. Rashad answered with a good right and Imes again grabbed a clinch. Brad got a take down a little over a minute into the fight but couldn’t do anything with it. Brad hit a good elbow and then a left hand. Rashad came back with 3 punches but Brad keeps coming at Rashad. Rashad hit two big right hands and Brad tried to clinch but Rashad kept firing and knocked Brad down. Rashad jumped on top to try and finish but Brad hung in there. Rashad passed the guard but Brad rolled over to his knees and got to his feet. Brad is cut from those punches. This was a good first round. Brad was winning until Rashad hit that series of punches that knocked Brad down and almost finished him. Rashad 10-9 after one round.
R2- Even start to the round. Rashad starts to get the distance on his jab. Brad comes up with some good shots and tied to finish Rashad but Rashad weathered the storm and never left his feet. Brad got Rashad up against the fence and swung at him a bunch of times but Rashad showed good head movement and ducked the onslaught. Rashad got off the fence and hit some jabs. Both guys are really winded with about a minute and a half to go in the round. Rashad stuck Brad with two right hands. Rashad hit another right but Brad came back at the end of the round with some shots. Really good round. I think Brad took this round but it was close. I’ve got 19-19 after two rounds. Good fight so far.
R3- Rashad connects with some shots early in the round. Rashad caught Brad leaning in and nailed him with a left hand that staggered and then dropped Brad. Rashad jumps on top for the finish but Brad tries to wrap him up. Brad gets to his feet and tries to get some shots in on Rashad. Brad clinches and then gets a take down and gets half guard. Rashad got back to his feet after some elbows. 90 seconds left in the round. Both guys are really tired. They swing at the end but both guys are too tired to do any damage. Really close round and really close fight. I’ve got Rashad with a close victory 29-28. Good fight.

TUF 2 Heavyweight Winner: Rashad Evans by Decision (Split)

They meet heads during the meeting at the beginning of the fight and John McCarthy pushes Diaz back to his corner. Looks like a lot of bad blood is brewing between these two guys.
R1- Diego quickly takes Nick’s back. Diaz spins around and Diego is in his guard but Diaz is very active. Diego lands some pretty decent shots but Diaz remains pretty active which is making him hard to hit. Nick reverses and gets Diego in side control but Diego quickly reverses back. Diego is surprisingly controlling Diaz on the ground. Diego looked really good in this round. Sanchez 10-9 in the first round.

Lightweight Fight- Melvin Guillard (37-6-3) vs. Rick Davis (3-0-1)- UFC 60- 5/27/06
Davis’s nickname is “The Flying Squirrel.” This is Davis’s first UFC fight. Melvin was on season 2 of The Ultimate Fighter. Davis is 13 years older than Guillard. This was Guillard’s first fight as a lightweight- dropping down from welterweight.
R1- Davis seems like a pretty unorthodox fighter. Guillard grabs an early clinch and lands some knees. Guillard is showing some good quick hands so far and connected on one good shot and then landed some knees. Guillard then hit a highlight reel right hand that knocked Davis right out. Tremendous punch. Guillard looked real good in this fight.
Winner: Melvin Guillard by KO R1 1:37
Welterweight Fight- Karo Parisyan (22-3) vs. Nick Thompson (22-8)- UFC 59- 4/15/06
Thompson has a 2 inch height advantage and a 3 inch reach advantage. Parisyan’s first two losses were to Sean Sherk, Thompson’s training partner.
R1- Karo immediately went for a knockout punch but missed so instead he took Thompson down to the mat. Karo mainly stayed in guard and half guard trying to look for an opening. He briefly got caught in a leg lock but quickly got out. Karo hit some strikes and then got turned over by Thompson. They went back to their feet and Karo got another take down. Karo is basically taking this fight where he wants to in terms of controlling the cage. Karo took side control and then moved to the mount position. Karo drew blood with some good strikes and Karo took his back and kept delivering shots and the ref stopped the fight when Thompson tapped out.

Middleweight Fight- Chris Leben (16-2) vs. Jason MacDonald (18-7)- UFC 66- 12/30/06
The Crippler versus The Athlete. MacDonald is a jiu jitsu fighter and Leben is a stand up fighter. MacDonald has a 4 inch height advantage and 4 and a half inch reach advantage.
R1- Leben immediately caught MacDonald’s leg kick and it almost seems like MacDonald pulls guard. Leben gets back to his feet and hits a couple of shots but MacDonald definitely wants to keep this on the ground. They clinched against the cage but the ref broke them up and re-started. MacDonald keeps going for the take down but isn’t getting it so far. MacDonald clinches Leben against the cage again but Leben escapes. Leben gets in a couple of shots with about a minute left in the round. Both guys exchange shots and then MacDonald goes for another take down. This was a tough round to score. MacDonald controlled more of the round but never really got in any offense. Leben 10-9.
R2- Leben catches a MacDonald kick and takes him down. Almost a repeat of the beginning of the first round. Leben moves to side control but can’t accomplish anything and they stand back up and MacDonald clinches Leben against the cage but it’s broken up again. This is Matt Wiman’s UFC debut. His nickname is “Handsome.”
R1- Wiman worked hard and finally got a take down after working for it for about a minute. Wiman got some punches and then clamped in a guillotine on Spencer. Wiman lost it and took full mount and Spencer quickly gave up his back. Wiman went for a Rear Naked Choke but Spencer blocked. Spencer spun out and got back to his feet. Both guys hit some punches and then Fisher hit a knee and took Wiman’s guard. Fisher ended up opening a good cut on Wiman’s forehead at the end of the round and then gave him a nice push after the bell rung. I’ve got Wiman 10-9 but Spencer did a good job recovering and coming back at the end of this round and setting himself up for round two.
R2- The exchanged a couple of strikes to open the round. Wiman went for a take down but Fisher got it instead and landed a couple of shots. Fisher stands up and hits some knees and punches and then hits a flying knee to take out Wiman. Great finish by Fisher. Good fight.

UFC 86 "Jackson vs Griffin" Re-Cap/Thoughts
UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin
Lightweight Fight- Tyson Griffin (11-1) vs. Marcus Aurelio (16-5)
Griffin comes out to "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. They put over Griffin as being the only guy to beat WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber. Griffin is definitely the fan favorite in this one. Aurelio has a win over Gomi to his credit.
R1- Long feeling out process. Marcus gets taken down and Tyson hits him with some hammer punches. Marcus is trying to catch Tyson in a submission. Marcus seems content to stay in the guard and go for submissions and eat some of Tyson's punches. In the stand up game Tyson controlled the cage and got in more shots. Round One goes to Griffin 10-9.
Jamie Pressly is in the house, I think she was at the last show. Seems like she could be a pretty big fight fan. Thiago Alves is in Aurelio's corner.
R2- They start out this round completely opposite of last round as they both come out throwing but then slow down a little. Griffin has the classy sponsor of "Condom Depot" on his ass. Griffin gets a slam with 2 minutes left in the round after a long clinch. Marcus is able to reverse it and get a slam of his own and looks to be taking Griffin's back but Griffin rolls over and is on top. Marcus almost gets a triangle but doesn't get it. This was a much closer round than the first one but I've still got Griffin winning this one and have Griffin up 20-18 at this point.
R3- Marcus is really tired in this round and Griffin is hitting a lot more punches this round. Griffin runs in and gets a take down with about a minute and a half left. Marcus almost gets an arm submission a couple of times near the end of the fight. I've got Griffin taking this fight 30-27. He controlled the fight without dominating. All 3 judges score the fight 30-27.
Winner: Tyson Griffin by Decision (Unanimous)
Michael Bisping is at the fight and they show a video segment of him and talk about how good he has looked since he moved down to 185 lbs.
Welterweight Fight- Josh Koshcheck (12-2) vs. Chris Lytle (35-15-4)
We have our second Condom Depot fighter of the night in Chris Lytle. Koscheck gets booed when he comes out. Koscheck has a 5" reach advantage.
R1- Lytle throws a lot at first but doesn't hit much. Koshcheck just kind of sits back and waits and gets a take down with about 2 and a half minutes left in the round. Lytle grabs a guillotine but can't hold it and Koscheck has half guard. Not a lot of action in this round but I've got it Koscheck 10-9 as he controlled the ground for the last half of the fight and when they were stood up Lytle was more aggressive but didn't really land anything substantial.
R2- Koscheck went for a take down and it was stopped but he landed some nice shots. Koscheck goes for another take down and Lytle grabs him in a guillotine just like in Round One. Koscheck gets out of the submission and is in half guard and throws some elbows. Koscheck puts him up against the cage and is getting some nice, hard shots in on Lytle. Lytle is bleeding and continues to take some shots from Koscheck. Koscheck is nailing him and Lytle grabs him to stop the punches. Lots of blood on the canvas near the cage. There is even blood on the camera lens at ringside. Koscheck just laying on him and punching him. Lytle has a pool of blood under his head. He's lost a ton of blood. This was a 10-8 round to Koscheck. I've got it 20-17 after two rounds with Koscheck just absolutely dominating the Second Round.
R3- Koscheck has Lytle's blood in his hair. Koscheck tries to get a take down. Lytle goes for a kimura and then a guillotine but Koscheck spins out and Lytle grabs him again but Koscheck gets out of the move and Koscheck is on top again. Koscheck landing more elbows. Rogan makes the comment of this being bloodier than BJ Penn/Joe Stevenson. Koscheck is hitting Lytle with punches and the ref stand them up. The announcers thought he was going to stop the fight. Just a crazy call by the ref in this position as Koscheck had a dominate position and was being active and punching Lytle. When Lytle stands up he has blood all of his head and arms. Lytle gets some shots in but slips on his own blood and Koscheck clinches him. Koscheck just trying not to make a mistake. Ref separates them again. Both guys just throwing at the end of the round. The fans boo Koscheck at the end of the fight but man he put on a good fight tonight and Lytle just bleed all over the place. This is a fight that needs to be seen just for the blood. Good fight and good showing by Koscheck. I've got Koscheck winning 30-26. Koscheck's hair is basically red with Lytle's blood after the fight. Scorecards at the end of the fight are 30-26, 29-27, 30-28. Some interesting scores there.

Lightweight Fight- Gleison Tibau (27-4) vs. Joe Stevenson (33-8)
Tibau comes out to "Iron Man."
R1- Stevenson catches Tibau with a nice left early but he absorbs it. Stevenson hits a right and Tibau goes down. Stevenson grabs a brief guillotine but Tibau gets out. They sprawl and go back to their feet. Tibau gets a take down but doesn't get anything. Stevenson darts in and gets a take down with two and a half minutes left in the round. Tibau catches him in an arm submission. Stevenson looks worried. Tibau is hitting Stevenson with some punches while he has him in the arm submission. Stevenson just kind of sitting and watching the clock and looking bored and telling the ref to stand them up. Stevenson plays it off like the move didn't hurt but Tibau had him trapped for about half the round. Tibau 10-9 in round one on my score card. Could see it being judged the other way if someone bought into Joe's selling of the move.
BJ Penn is shown and he mugs for the camera and gets a good response. He's got a hottie next to him.
R2- Tibau gets a take down but they quickly stand up. Tibau with another take down and passes guard quickly. Tibau mounts but Stevenson sprawls out without any damage. Tibau gets another take down but Stevenson grabs him in a guillotine and Tibau taps out. Surprising turn of events as I had Tibau winning the first round and this round until Stevenson grabbed that one move. Good job by Stevenson in sticking in there and taking advantage of the move when he got the opportunity.
Winner: Joe Stevenson by Submission (Guillotine Choke) R2 2:57

Middleweight Fight- Patrick Cote (13-4) vs. Ricardo Almeida (9-2)
This is the Co-Main Event. Almeida comes out to CCR's "Fortunate Son." Cote gets a good reaction from the fans.
WEC Bantamweight Champ Miguel Torres is at the fight. He had a really exciting fight on the last WEC show that featured the Main Event of Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver.
R1- The clinch and Almeida jumps into Cote and grabs him and pulls guard. Cote gets out of it pretty quickly and they stand back up. They clinch for a while and Almeida gets a take down with two minutes left in the round. Almeida gets in a couple of good shots and then gets some Ground and Pound. Almeida really controlling the first round and Cote ends the round on his back. Ameida takes Round One 10-9. Cote has a tear on his glove and they have to tape it so he gets a little longer to recover.
R2- Almeida pulls guard and goes into a rubber guard type move where Cote can't do much. Cote hits a punch and gets out of the hold. Cote is starting to land a couple of shots in the stand up game. Almeida gets a brief guillotine but Cote slips out. Cote lands a right hand right before the buzzer. This was a real close round. Almeida tried to pull guard the entire round and Cote tried to stay on his feet. I think Cote hitting that punch at the end and flooring Almeida might have won him the round. I'll go 19-19 right now but could see Almeida up 20-18.
R3- Cote hits a really nice leg kick about a minute and a half into the round. Cote hits a good combo. Not much action in this round but Cote is starting to bring it. Almeida gets a take down with 30 seconds left in the round. Almeida misses a submission and Cote gets on top and gets in a couple of shots. This fight is really too close to call and I can see it going either way. Either way, neither guy finished so they can't really complain if they get the loss. This was the least exciting fight of the night by a wide margin. I think Almeida probably gets the win in this fight, possibly by split decision. Judges score cards are 29-28 Cote, 29-28 Almeida, and 29-28 Cote.
They kind of billed this as the winner gets a shot at Anderson Silva, but Cote didn't really do anything to deserve a title shot IMO.

Light Heavyweight Championship Fight- Rampage Jackson © vs. Forrest Griffin (15-4)
Forrest gets a big reaction and has Mandy Moore on his side. Rampage gets the heel reaction.
R1- Forrest is more active early and is getting some shots in on Rampage. Rampage gets a good shot in on Forrest about two and a half minutes into the fight. Forrest is effectively using some leg kicks. Rampage with a really good combination half way through the round and it wobbles Forrest. Forrest comes right back and takes at Rampage. Forrest using the leg kicks effectively. Forrest comes in and eats a big Rampage uppercut and he goes down with about a minute left in the Round. Rampage jumps on top and Forrest tries to latch onto Rampage. Rampage moves him against the cage. Rampage gets some shots in but Forrest gets to his feet and hits some knees. They exchange on their feet and are swinging for the fences. Really good first round and Rampage looks a little bit like he underestimated Forrest as he walks to his corner. Forrest did a really good job in Round One but I think he ultimately lost the Round due to getting caught with that uppercut. Forrest really got rocked at two different times during the Round even though I thought that he controlled a lot of the fight and did a great job with the leg kicks. I'll go Rampage 10-9 in Round One but Forrest made a great showing and has set himself up well for the rest of the fight.
R2- Forrest opens up with a leg kick and Rampage limps a little bit. Forrest with another leg kick and then another. Forrest hits some knees and takes Rampage down. Forrest has half guard. Forrest hitting some elbows. Forrest passes the guard and gets side control. Forrest working on elbows and punches to the head. Forrest gets to full mount. Big "Forrest" chant from the crowd. Forrest with short elbows. Forrest just dominated this round and ties up the fight and definitely has all the momentum on his side going into Round Three. It will be interesting to see how Rampage's leg is when Round Three starts. That looked like a 10-8 round which makes this 19-18 Forrest.
R3- Rampage with a good combo about 2 minutes into the round. Rampage hits a good counter punch that briefly stuns Forrest. Rampage with another combo. Forrest has hit a couple of kicks this round but not much else. Rampage with a couple of nice punches. Rampage with a body shot. Rampage with another good counter punch as he caught Forrest with a left. They swing for the fences at the end of the round. Good comeback round for Rampage as he takes this round. Forrest lost a lot of momentum this round and didn't try for a take down where he dominated last round. Rampage 28 Forrest 28.
R4- They really go after each other about 30 seconds into the round and Rampage lands a hook and Forrest bails out before he catches another one. Rampage with another good shot and then they clinch and Rampage ends up with the take down and he's on top. Forrest is cut above the right eye. Forrest doing a pretty good job defending and grabs a triangle. Rampage picks him up and goes to slam him off and does. Really good fight. Rampage back in Forrest's guard and Forrest is doing a good job defending. Forrest almost got a submission but Rampage bailed out and as Forrest was trying to get up Rampage caught him with a good shot but didn't knock him down. Rampage hits a couple of nice shots again as they mix it up in the last minute of the round. Forrest almost caught Rampage with a submission but Rampage really out landed Forrest in this round and cut him open. I've got this Rampage 38 Forrest 37 right now. Very close fight. Rampage has barely won three rounds in my book and Forrest dominated the one round that he took. I can see one of the rounds I gave to Rampage possible going to Forrest on some of the score cards. Forrest is controlling the pace of the fight but Rampage is out landing him on punches.
R5- Forrest going back to the leg kicks early in this round. Forrest hits a big leg kick, Rampage came back with a big punch and Forrest returned the favor. Forrest looks to be landing more in this round so far about 3 and a half minutes into the round. This one is going to come down to the wire. Both guys landing some shots in the last 30 seconds and they end the fight in a clinch. Great Fight. I think Forrest took the final round which on my score card puts it even at 47-47. Wow. It will be interesting to see how the judges score this one.

Great Fight. Looks like two of the judges gave one of the close rounds that I scored for Rampage to Forrest (probably had to be Round 1). Not sure about the 49-46 as I didn't see Forrest win 4 of the 5 rounds.
Part of me says that to "be the champ you have to beat the champ" and part of me says that Forrest did control the pace of the fight and should have gotten the win. IMO it was a really even 50/50 fight that definitely needs a re-match. I think Rampage overlooked Forrest, especially when I look back at the 5 minute interview that Rampage did on ESPN news the day before the fight. Kudos to both guys for putting on a great fight, definitely one of the top this year that I have seen.

Lighweight Fight- Melvin Guillard vs. Dennis Silver
R1- Guillard just jumps Silver at the beginning and nails some shots but Silver gets back to his feet. Guillard nails Silver with a ton of punches and this one is over. Great showing for Guillard.

Overall, this was a really good show. Forrest/Rampage is a contender for FOTY, Koscheck/Lytle and Stevenson/Tibau were both good fights as well.
Lightweight Fight- Tyson Griffin (11-1) vs. Marcus Aurelio (16-5)
Griffin comes out to "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor. They put over Griffin as being the only guy to beat WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber. Griffin is definitely the fan favorite in this one. Aurelio has a win over Gomi to his credit.
R1- Long feeling out process. Marcus gets taken down and Tyson hits him with some hammer punches. Marcus is trying to catch Tyson in a submission. Marcus seems content to stay in the guard and go for submissions and eat some of Tyson's punches. In the stand up game Tyson controlled the cage and got in more shots. Round One goes to Griffin 10-9.
Jamie Pressly is in the house, I think she was at the last show. Seems like she could be a pretty big fight fan. Thiago Alves is in Aurelio's corner.
R2- They start out this round completely opposite of last round as they both come out throwing but then slow down a little. Griffin has the classy sponsor of "Condom Depot" on his ass. Griffin gets a slam with 2 minutes left in the round after a long clinch. Marcus is able to reverse it and get a slam of his own and looks to be taking Griffin's back but Griffin rolls over and is on top. Marcus almost gets a triangle but doesn't get it. This was a much closer round than the first one but I've still got Griffin winning this one and have Griffin up 20-18 at this point.
R3- Marcus is really tired in this round and Griffin is hitting a lot more punches this round. Griffin runs in and gets a take down with about a minute and a half left. Marcus almost gets an arm submission a couple of times near the end of the fight. I've got Griffin taking this fight 30-27. He controlled the fight without dominating. All 3 judges score the fight 30-27.
Winner: Tyson Griffin by Decision (Unanimous)
Michael Bisping is at the fight and they show a video segment of him and talk about how good he has looked since he moved down to 185 lbs.
Welterweight Fight- Josh Koshcheck (12-2) vs. Chris Lytle (35-15-4)
We have our second Condom Depot fighter of the night in Chris Lytle. Koscheck gets booed when he comes out. Koscheck has a 5" reach advantage.
R1- Lytle throws a lot at first but doesn't hit much. Koshcheck just kind of sits back and waits and gets a take down with about 2 and a half minutes left in the round. Lytle grabs a guillotine but can't hold it and Koscheck has half guard. Not a lot of action in this round but I've got it Koscheck 10-9 as he controlled the ground for the last half of the fight and when they were stood up Lytle was more aggressive but didn't really land anything substantial.
R2- Koscheck went for a take down and it was stopped but he landed some nice shots. Koscheck goes for another take down and Lytle grabs him in a guillotine just like in Round One. Koscheck gets out of the submission and is in half guard and throws some elbows. Koscheck puts him up against the cage and is getting some nice, hard shots in on Lytle. Lytle is bleeding and continues to take some shots from Koscheck. Koscheck is nailing him and Lytle grabs him to stop the punches. Lots of blood on the canvas near the cage. There is even blood on the camera lens at ringside. Koscheck just laying on him and punching him. Lytle has a pool of blood under his head. He's lost a ton of blood. This was a 10-8 round to Koscheck. I've got it 20-17 after two rounds with Koscheck just absolutely dominating the Second Round.
R3- Koscheck has Lytle's blood in his hair. Koscheck tries to get a take down. Lytle goes for a kimura and then a guillotine but Koscheck spins out and Lytle grabs him again but Koscheck gets out of the move and Koscheck is on top again. Koscheck landing more elbows. Rogan makes the comment of this being bloodier than BJ Penn/Joe Stevenson. Koscheck is hitting Lytle with punches and the ref stand them up. The announcers thought he was going to stop the fight. Just a crazy call by the ref in this position as Koscheck had a dominate position and was being active and punching Lytle. When Lytle stands up he has blood all of his head and arms. Lytle gets some shots in but slips on his own blood and Koscheck clinches him. Koscheck just trying not to make a mistake. Ref separates them again. Both guys just throwing at the end of the round. The fans boo Koscheck at the end of the fight but man he put on a good fight tonight and Lytle just bleed all over the place. This is a fight that needs to be seen just for the blood. Good fight and good showing by Koscheck. I've got Koscheck winning 30-26. Koscheck's hair is basically red with Lytle's blood after the fight. Scorecards at the end of the fight are 30-26, 29-27, 30-28. Some interesting scores there.

Lightweight Fight- Gleison Tibau (27-4) vs. Joe Stevenson (33-8)
Tibau comes out to "Iron Man."
R1- Stevenson catches Tibau with a nice left early but he absorbs it. Stevenson hits a right and Tibau goes down. Stevenson grabs a brief guillotine but Tibau gets out. They sprawl and go back to their feet. Tibau gets a take down but doesn't get anything. Stevenson darts in and gets a take down with two and a half minutes left in the round. Tibau catches him in an arm submission. Stevenson looks worried. Tibau is hitting Stevenson with some punches while he has him in the arm submission. Stevenson just kind of sitting and watching the clock and looking bored and telling the ref to stand them up. Stevenson plays it off like the move didn't hurt but Tibau had him trapped for about half the round. Tibau 10-9 in round one on my score card. Could see it being judged the other way if someone bought into Joe's selling of the move.
BJ Penn is shown and he mugs for the camera and gets a good response. He's got a hottie next to him.
R2- Tibau gets a take down but they quickly stand up. Tibau with another take down and passes guard quickly. Tibau mounts but Stevenson sprawls out without any damage. Tibau gets another take down but Stevenson grabs him in a guillotine and Tibau taps out. Surprising turn of events as I had Tibau winning the first round and this round until Stevenson grabbed that one move. Good job by Stevenson in sticking in there and taking advantage of the move when he got the opportunity.

Middleweight Fight- Patrick Cote (13-4) vs. Ricardo Almeida (9-2)
This is the Co-Main Event. Almeida comes out to CCR's "Fortunate Son." Cote gets a good reaction from the fans.
WEC Bantamweight Champ Miguel Torres is at the fight. He had a really exciting fight on the last WEC show that featured the Main Event of Urijah Faber vs. Jens Pulver.
R1- The clinch and Almeida jumps into Cote and grabs him and pulls guard. Cote gets out of it pretty quickly and they stand back up. They clinch for a while and Almeida gets a take down with two minutes left in the round. Almeida gets in a couple of good shots and then gets some Ground and Pound. Cote has a tear on his glove and they have to tape it so he gets a little longer to recover.

UFC Unleashed 4/23 Re-Cap
Lightweight Fight- Rich Clementi (37-12-1) vs. Melvin Guillard (39-7-3)- UFC 79- 12/29/07
R1- Both guys feeling each other out. Guillard has a real explosive combo but hasn’t connected yet. Guillard has “Condom Depot” as the ad on his shorts, classy. Clementi grabs Guillard in a bear hug and slams him. Clementi has Guillard’s back and basically has him in a full nelson. Guillard flips it over and they get back to their feet. Guillard nails Clementi with a couple of punches and then slams him down. Clementi reverses and he’s on top. Real back and forth fight, Clementi with more cage control in Round 1. Clementi grabs a choke and it’s over. Clementi then does a classy “crotch chop” while above Guillard after the win.
Winner: Rich Clementi via submission (Rear Naked Choke) R1 4:40
Middleweight Fight- Kendall Grove (10-4) vs. Jorge Rivera (14-6)- UFC 80- 1/19/08
Jorge takes him down quickly and is landing some punches against the cage. Jorge has his back and is landing more punches. Kendall to his feet but he’s eating punch after punch and this one is over quickly and impressively. Jorge with a dominating win.

R1- Machida is unbeaten so far. Soko has been training with Dan Henderson. Soko hits a couple of nice punches early and gets a take down but Machida quickly reverses and is on top controlling in the half guard. Machida is going after his arm but gives it up and is trying to get some punches. Soko doing a good job defending but not actively seeming to try and get out. The ref stands them up. Soko with another take down but they are quickly back to their feet. Round goes to Machida but he definitely wasn’t dominating.
R2- Not much going on in this round. Machida is hitting a couple of kicks and then he gets an opening and trips Soku and goes after him in full guard with a bunch of punches. Machida going for a submission now with an arm triangle but losses it. Soko seems to be real winded as he’s really been controlled in this fight and especially this round. Machida on top and throwing some elbows. Machida grabs the arm triangle again and gets the victory. Real good win for Machida. He seems like a real good technical fighter, not exciting but seems like a real good tactician.

Welterweight- Interim Welterweight Title Match: Georges St-Pierre (14-2) vs. Matt Hughes (43-5)- UFC 79- 12/29/07
This is the third fight between these two fighters. This was on UFC Wired just a week or so ago.
R1- The first minute is active but both guys real cautious as nothing of note has been hit yet. Hughes tried for an early take down but Georges backed down. Hughes again goes for take down but is denied. Georges going for some kicks and then a Superman punch and Hughes goes for a take down but the clinch and Georges takes Hughes down and is on top in full guard. Georges with some light punches from the top. Georges pushes Hughes up against the cage. Georges with some short elbows. Georges with some punches again. Georges dominating so far but not really close to a stoppage. Hughes needs to find a way out. Georges slams Hughes a couple of times. Georges got his back in the last 10 seconds. Easy round to Georges here as he just dominated. Hughes really didn’t even get any offense at all in.
R2- Georges again takes Hughes down. Georges now in half guard. Hughes trying to get some offense from the bottom as he hits an elbow. Georges with some elbows. He’s in full guard now. Georges back on top in half guard and mounts Hughes and has his back with 1:30 left in the round. They battle and Georges has him up against the cage now. Hughes now with Georges leg but can’t get the takedown. They are tied up and Georges with a great take down into side control. Georges with an arm bar type move and Hughes taps.
Georges St-Pierre just absolutely dominated this fight from start to finish.

Georges with some light punches from the top. Georges pushes Hughes up against the cage. Georges with some short elbows. Georges with some punches again. Georges dominating so far but not really close to a stoppage. Hughes needs to find a way out. Georges slams Hughes a couple of times. Georges got his back in the last 10 seconds. Easy round to Georges here as he just dominated. Hughes really didn’t even get any offense at all in.
R2- Georges again takes Hughes down. Georges now in half guard. Hughes trying to get some offense from the bottom as he hits an elbow. Georges with some elbows. He’s in full guard now. Georges back on top in half guard and mounts Hughes and has his back with 1:30 left in the round. They battle and Georges has him up against the cage now. Hughes now with Georges leg but can’t get the takedown. They are tied up and Georges with a great take down into side control. Georges with an arm bar type move and Hughes taps.
Georges St-Pierre just absolutely dominated this fight from start to finish.
