Heavyweight Fight- Junior Dos Santos (9-1) vs. Gilbert Yvel (36-13-1)
Dos Santos is 3-0 in the UFC and is a Top 10 Heavyweight. This is Yvel’s return to the UFC. This is an important fight for both guys. Dos Santos comes out to the theme to Rocky with his ear looking similar to James Thompson’s did when he fought Kimbo in Elite XC.
R1- Both guys throwing freely in the early going of this fight. Dos Santos floored Yvel with a huge left hand two minutes into the round and then started peppering him with punches on the ground and Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight. Dos Santos is no joke.
Winner: Junior Dos Santos by TKO (Strikes) R1 2:07
Lightweight Fight- Jim Miller (15-2) vs. Duane Ludwig (27-9)
This is Duane Ludwig’s return to the UFC but he was 2-0 in his previous UFC fights. Ludwig is taking this fight on 2 weeks notice and Joe Rogan points out that he cut down from the 180s. Jim Miller comes out to CCR’s “Bad Moon Rising”.
R1- Miller hit a right that floored Ludwig and Miller quickly jumped on top and mounted. Ludwig tried to get out and Miller clamped on an arm bar and got the submission victory.
Winner: Jim Miller by Submission (Arm Bar) R1 2:31
Takanori Gomi is in the crowd and they show some of his highlights from Pride and they announce that he has signed with the UFC.
Lightweight Fight- Joe Lauzon (17-4) vs. Sam Stout (15-5-1)
R1- Lauzon got a quick take down in the opening moments of the round. Lauzon opened up a cut on Stout’s head and then grabbed a kimura but Stout was able to slip out and get back to his feet. Stout came back in the second half of the round and landed some good shots. Lauzon 10-9 but Stout almost stole that round.
R2- Stout got a take down about one minute into the round but Stout got to his feet without any damage. Stout is getting the better of the stand up in this round. This round definitely went to Stout as he ended the round in Lauzon’s guard.
R3- Stout controls the early part of the round by avoiding take downs and continually throwing strikes. Lauzon got a take down with two minutes left in the fight. Lauzon mounted and then tried for a guillotine but couldn’t clamp it in and Stout got back to his feet with one minute left in the fight. Stout really attacked at the finish and I’ve got him taking this round and the fight.
Judges score cards say: 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27
Winner: Sam Stout by Decision (Unanimous)
Welterweight Fight- Paul Daley (22-8-2) vs. Dustin Hazelett (14-4)
Daley came in overweight at 172 but Hazelett agreed to take the fight. This is Daley’s second fight in the UFC, with his first being a victory over Martin Kampmann.
R1- Both fighters felt each other out for the first half of the round mostly throwing leg and front kicks. At the half way point of the round Daley exploded with a big left hand and then jumped on top and finished the fight as Herb Dean stepped in. Very impressive finish by Daley.
Winner: Paul Daley by TKO (Strikes) R1 2:24
Light Heavyweight Fight- Rashad Evans (18-1-1) vs. Thiago Silva (14-1)
The UFC tells us that Rashad lands 58% of his take down attempts, has won 4 of his last 5 by knockout and holds the UFC record for most take downs without being swept. Thiago has won 12 of 13 fights by strike stoppage, his average UFC fight length is 3:48 and he has a 77% take down defense rate. Both fighters only have one loss on their record and it’s to the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida.
R1- Rashad quickly came at Thiago and clinched and then got a slam at the one minute mark. Rashad mounted but Thiago didn’t take any damage and got back to his feet. They threw some strikes and then Rashad got another take down about half way through the round. Silva again got to his feet without taking any damage. Rashad hit some good strikes against the cage and then got another brief take down. Rashad looks like he’s wearing Thiago down and is up 10-9 after one round.
R2- Rashad got a take down in the second minute of the round. Silva got up again but Rashad slammed him back down. Thiago landed a couple of strikes but then got taken down again. Rashad 20-18.
R3- Rashad got a quick take down but couldn’t hold it. Rashad missed a big swing and then Thiago put his gloves down and leaned his chin in and he and Rashad hammed it up for the fans for a minute. Thiago landed a big time right hand that wobbled Rashad’s knees. Thiago got Rashad down but Rashad clamped onto a leg. One minute and forty five seconds left in the round and Thiago got Rashad back to his feet and Rashad is looking at the clock. Thiago is landing some good shots but he looks like he’s running out of steam. Rashad clinched Thiago against the cage and held on to win this one by decision on my score card 29-28.

Light Heavyweight Fight- Brandon Vera (10-3) vs. Krzysztof Soszynski (19-9-1)
Krzysztof has looked very good since leaving his season of TUF. He beat Andre Gusmao in the first round of his last fight at UFC 98 and before that he defeated Brian Stann at UFC 97. Vera handled Mike Patt at UFC 96 in his last fight but lost a close fight previous to that to Keith Jardine in which both guys looked awful and neither deserved to win. Vera has a slight height and reach advantage.
R1- Vera hit some counter strikes early that backed Krzysztof off early. Lots of clinching in the first round as both guys struggled to get position on the other guy. Krzysztof got stuffed at the end of the round and Vera landed a couple of elbows. Close round that I give to Vera 10-9.
R2- Krzysztof had a tough time in this round catching up to Vera. Vera once again did a good job of countering Krzysztof’s attacks. Krzysztof’s only real offense was clinching and leaning on Vera. Krzysztof got a take down at the one minute mark but could hold it or do anything with it. Neither guy really did anything to win this round but Vera hit more strikes. I’ve got Vera up 20-18.
R3- Krzysztof clinched Vera and Vera nearly got a kimura but couldn’t lock it in. Vera landed some good knees in the clinch and then took down Krzysztof and landed some shots before Krzysztof got back to his feet. Krzysztof got really tired at the end of the round. Vera is going to take this fight 30-27 in my book. Not an exciting fight but Vera continues to improve at Light Heavyweight. Krzysztof was just outmatched in this fight.
Judges score cards say: 30-27 on all three score cards. Post-fight Vera wore an Affliction T-shirt. It’s been a while since one of those has been in the Octagon.
Winner: Brandon Vera by Decision (Unanimous)
Rashad Evans is in attendance and he gets a round of boos from the crowd.
Middleweight Fight- Demian Maia (11-0) vs. Nate Marquardt (31-8-2)
This fight is for a shot at Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Marquardt has been impressive lately in his fight at UFC 88 with Martin Kampmann and his victory over Wilson Gouveia. Maia is undefeated and has recently submitted Nate Quarry and Jason MacDonald. Both of these guys are easily Top 10 Middleweights in the World Rankings and borderline Top 5 guys right now. The winner of this fight is a Top 5 World Middleweight. Maia is a BJJ Black Belt who has been working on his striking with Wanderlei Silva and Marquardt is part of Greg Jackson’s training camp.
R1- Maia came in with a kick and Marquardt just blasted him with a big time right hand and Maia hit the mat like a ton of bricks. Maia was not out but the ref stopped the fight. I’m not crazy about the stoppage. Marquardt would have probably finished the fight but he didn’t jump right on Maia and I think that influenced the decision. Either way that was a great punch by Marquardt.
Looks like Marquardt has earned his re-match with Anderson Silva and honestly that match can happen ASAP as neither Marquardt nor Anderson Silva got hurt in the slightest in their fights.
Winner: Nate Marquardt by KO R1 0:21
Middleweight Fight- Chris Leben (18-5) vs. Jake Rosholt (5-1)
Chris Leben’s last fight was a loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 89. After that fight Leben served a suspension for failing a drug test. Rosholt got submitted quickly by Dan Miller in his last fight. This fight is in Leben’s hometown. Rosholt has a 2” height and 4” reach advantage.
R1- Not much action in the first couple of minutes. Rosholt jumped in and Leben got a take down that almost looked like Rosholt pulled guard. Leben gave up his position to try and get a good shot but he didn’t and both fighters got back to their feet. Rosholt got a take down with a minute left in the round and landed some strikes. Leben took some wild shots at the end of the round and landed some. Leben looked like he got hurt by some of those Rosholt strikes. I give the first round to Rosholt as he did more damage but it was close.
R2- Rosholt went for a kick but Leben countered with a left hand and it dropped Rosholt as he was caught in the air and Leben jumped on top. The ref stood the fight back up due to lack of action by Leben. Leben had a leg kick blocked but landed a good punch and then clinched Rosholt up against the cage. Rosholt broke free and landed a punch and got a take down. Leben looks really tired right now. Rosholt landed some good strikes towards the end of the round but let Leben up. I’ve got Leben taking this round although it was very close so it’s 19-19 going into the final round.
R3- Rosholt got an early take down in the first 30 seconds of the round. Rosholt got an arm triangle and it looked like Leben was going to tap but he ended up passing out in the submission. Good showing by Rosholt. Leben had a tough time with his conditioning in this fight.
Winner: Jake Rosholt by Submission (Arm Triangle) R3 1:30
Heavyweight Fight- Tim Hague (10-1) vs. Todd Duffee (5-0)
This is a pre-show fight. The Heavyweight Division in UFC is all of the sudden pretty stacked. The winner of this fight will move up the ladder.
R1- Todd Duffee almost immediately knocked Hague down and then just destroyed him on the mat for a very quick finish. He hit a big left hand right off that bat when Hague left his chin wide open.
7 seconds is officially the fastest knockout in UFC history and Duffee got it in his UFC debut.
Winner: Todd Duffee by TKO (Punches) R1 0:07

Light Heavyweight Fight- Keith Jardine (14-6-1) vs. Thiago Silva (13-1)
Both of these fighters are coming off losses to two of the top Light Heavyweight fighters in the world. Jardine lost to Rampage Jackson and Silva got mauled by Lyoto Machida. Both fighters are borderline Top 10 World Light Heavyweights. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the Co-Main Event of the evening.
R1- Jardine hit a body kick but Silva took him down to the mat about 30 seconds into the fight but Jardine got back to his feet without taking any damage. Jardine came in with a flurry but Silva stuck Jardine with a punch and he went down. Silva landed some big shots on Jardine while he was on the mat and the ref jumped in and stopped the fight. Good stoppage as Jardine went limp after Silva hit two shots on the ground.
Winner: Thiago Silva by TKO (Strikes) R1 1:35
Middleweight Fight- Ed Herman vs. Aaron Simpson
This is our second re-show fight. Mike Goldberg drops the interesting trivia that Aaron Simpson and his wife competed together on American Gladiators.
R1- Both guys throw leather early into the fight. Simpson shot in and got a take down. Herman quickly got back to his feet but Simpson slammed him back down. Herman is trying some weird type of soccer style bicycle kick while Simpson is standing hovering above him. Herman hit a couple of up kicks and backed Simpson off. Herman got to his feet and hit a knee but Simpson tossed him to the mat. Very entertaining fight so far. Simpson hit a good combo and then hit a punch that floored Herman. Simpson jumped on top but Herman did a good job of defending. Herman got up but Simpson took him back down and got some Ground and Pound. Good first round that Simpson took 10-9. Herman limps back to his corner as it looks like his knee is hurt.
R2- Herman came out and tried a kick but Simpson grabbed it and took him down and Herman hurt his leg again and the ref stopped the fight. Herman showed a lot of heart in this fight and Simpson looks like he’s going to be a good fighter in the Middleweight division.
Winner: Aaron Simpson by TKO (Ref Stoppage) R2 0:17
Heavyweight Fight- Antonio Minotauro Nogueira (31-5-1) vs. Randy Couture (16-9)
The UFC tells us that Nogueira’s average fight length is 12:18, he lands 75% of strikes thrown when standing up and he leads Pride & UFC in Submission Attempts. The fans have this fight pegged at 77% in favor of Couture. Rogan says Big Nog had a meniscus tear and a bad staph infection going into the Frank Mir fight where he was hospitalized five weeks before the fight. Couture, fighting in his home town, gets a huge reaction at introductions.
Brock Lesnar is at this show for the fight and he gets some boos when he is shown.
R1- Both guys throw some leather early and Big Nog tries to pull guard but Randy avoids it. Big Nog hurt Randy about 2 minutes into the fight and followed him to the ground. Big Nog locked in a choke and Randy somehow was able to get out of the move and get back to his fight. Both guys exchange some leather a couple of times and pop the crowd. Both guys just slug it out at about the one minute mark left in the round with both guys landing good shots. Really good first round that I’ve got Big Nog taking 10-9.
R2- Big Nog hit some good strikes early and tried to pull guard on a guillotine but Randy slipped out and took Big Nog’s guard. Randy controlled but Big Nog flipped him over and mounted Randy. Big Nog went for an arm triangle and punched Randy to try to get a better position with the submission but Randy got free. Randy got back to his feet with one minute left in the round. Both guys throw leather with Randy backing down first. Randy rocked Big Nog with a big left hand but Big Nog took it and stayed on his feet. Randy hit him with a follow-up left jab but Big Nog absorbed it. Another good round. I’ve got Big Nog up 20-18 after two rounds.
R3- Randy started out the round with a good combo. Big Nog came next with a combo of his own and then dropped Randy and got on top and hit some hammer punches with Randy fighting through and hanging on. Big Nog passed guard and took side control. Randy was able to flip Big Nog over. Goldberg says Lesnar is next to them shouting instructions at Couture. Randy lands some elbows from the top. Big Nog reversed Randy right at the end of the fight. Really good fight. I’ve got Big Nog taking all three rounds and redeeming himself after the Frank Mir fight.
Judges score cards say: 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in favor of Big Nog.
Winner: Antonio Minotauro Nogueira by Decision (Unanimous)
Lightweight Fight- Evan Dunham vs. Marcus Aurelio
This is our third pre-show fight. Aurelio took this fight on short notice.
R1- Dunham got in a punch at the half way point of round one that knocked down Aurelio and Dunham followed him to the ground and got some good Ground and Pound but could not finish the fight. They went back to their feet and Dunham continued to win the round. Dunham took this round 10-9 and was really in control from the mid-point to the end of the round.
Dunham is an Xtreme Couture fighter and they show Shawn Thompkins giving him advice in the corner during the rest between rounds.
R2- Aurelio tries several times to get Dunham in the first minute and finally got him down after about a minute was gone from the round. Dunham was able to get back to his feet without taking much damage but Aurelio looks a lot more confident in this round. This was a fairly even round that will go to Aurelio due to the take down so it’s 19-19 going into the third and final round.
R3- Aurelio got a take down right off the bat in the final round. Aurelio got an Anaconda Choke submission attempt but Dunham was able to slip out. Dunham got a take down but did nothing with it as Aurelio quickly got back to his feet. The final minute of this fight sees Dunham trying to make this into a slugfest and Aurelio trying to take Dunham down. Really close round as they go toe to toe at the end of the round but I’ve got it for Aurelio due to the take down and submission attempt. So I’ve got Aurelio winning 29-28 in a very close fight.
Judges score cards say: 29-28 Aurelio, 29-28 Dunham, 30-27 Dunham

Randy was able to flip Big Nog over. Goldberg says Lesnar is next to them shouting instructions at Couture. Randy lands some elbows from the top. Big Nog reversed Randy right at the end of the fight. Really good fight. I’ve got Big Nog taking all three rounds and redeeming himself after the Frank Mir fight.
Judges score cards say: 30-27, 30-27, and 29-28 in favor of Big Nog.

Lightweight Fight- Evan Dunham vs. Marcus Aurelio
This is our third pre-show fight. Aurelio took this fight on short notice.
R1- Dunham got in a punch at the half way point of round one that knocked down Aurelio and Dunham followed him to the ground and got some good Ground and Pound but could not finish the fight. They went back to their feet and Dunham continued to win the round. Dunham took this round 10-9 and was really in control from the mid-point to the end of the round.
Dunham is an Xtreme Couture fighter and they show Shawn Thompkins giving him advice in the corner during the rest between rounds.
R2- Aurelio tries several times to get Dunham in the first minute and finally got him down after about a minute was gone from the round. Dunham was able to get back to his feet without taking much damage but Aurelio looks a lot more confident in this round. This was a fairly even round that will go to Aurelio due to the take down so it’s 19-19 going into the third and final round.
R3- Aurelio got a take down right off the bat in the final round. Aurelio got an Anaconda Choke submission attempt but Dunham was able to slip out. Dunham got a take down but did nothing with it as Aurelio quickly got back to his feet. The final minute of this fight sees Dunham trying to make this into a slugfest and Aurelio trying to take Dunham down. Really close round as they go toe to toe at the end of the round but I’ve got it for Aurelio due to the take down and submission attempt. So I’ve got Aurelio winning 29-28 in a very close fight.

This is one of the most anticipated and hyped shows for UFC. The Penn/St Pierre champion vs. champion re-match is the main draw. We also have what is basically a #1 Contenders fight between Lyoto Machida and Thiago Silva. A potential FOTN on any card is the lightweight fight between Nate Diaz and Clay Guida.
Lightweight Fight- Nate Diaz (10-2) vs. Clay Guida (24-6)
Clay Guida comes out to “Hero” by the Foo Fighters. Jason Guida is in Clay’s corner and Nick Diaz is in Nate’s corner. Maybe we can make this a 4-way brawl! Diaz has a big 5” height advantage and a huge 8” reach advantage. Diaz is undefeated in the UFC.
R1- Nate is doing a good job early with light jabs and keeping Guida at bay. Nate pulled guard and Clay put him in a full nelson after he took his back. Clay really controlled the second half of the round. Diaz stood up and landed a couple of shots as the round ended. About as even a round as there is but probably went to Guida.

R2- Guida basically just clinched and held Diaz a lot in this round while trying to get better position. Not much damage done in this round. Diaz tried a triangle at the end of the round but couldn’t get it. I’ve got Guida up 20-18 although he’s done very little damage to Diaz at this point. Realistically this fight is either 20-18 Guida or 19-19 at this point. It smells like a split decision to me unless Diaz can get a submission.
R3- Diaz starts this round like the first round by picking apart Guida with jabs. Diaz is hitting some good shots in this round and is mocking Guida. Guida got a clinch and tries to hold on for a win. Diaz definitely won this round.
This was a close fight. If you are judging based on an entire fight (which UFC doesn’t) then Diaz won this fight. But if you are judging each round separately then I think Guida squeaks this one out 29-28.

Welterweight Fight- Karo Parisyan (26-5) vs. Dong Hyun Kim (11-0-1)
Both guys are Black Belts in Judo. Parisyan has been battling a panic disorder, a hamstring injury and a back injury. Parisyan has Greg Jackson in his corner and that’s a good thing. Parisyan is coming off a loss to Top Contender Thiago Alves and Kim’s last fight was at UFC 88 where he won a split decision against Matt Brown. Kim has a 3” height advantage and a 4” reach advantage. Frank Mir is in Kim’s corner.
R1- Kim got an early take down and then took Karo’s back. Karo flipped and tried to knock him off but Kim is just latched on like Shinya Aoki. Kim went for an arm bar but Karo slipped out. Karo then almost got caught in a triangle. Kim took this round 10-9. He didn’t do a lot of damage but he really controlled and wore down Karo.
R2- Kim got an early take down and Karo got a kimura on Kim but couldn’t finish. Karo hit a beautiful judo throw half through the round and landed in side control. Karo’s mouthpiece has come out twice and the ref warns him that if it happens again that he is deducting a point. Karo lands strikes towards the end of the round. Karo wins this round and we are at 19-19 after two rounds. Karo still seems like he is having a lot of trouble with the mouth piece.

R3- Kim gets an early take down and Karo pushes him off and the ref warns him about up kicks to the face. A minute and a half left in the fight and this is anybody’s fight. Really tough finally round to judge. It was very even. This one is a toss up.

Light Heavyweight Fight- Stephan Bonnar (14-4) vs. Jon Jones (7-0)
Jones is undefeated and looked good in his only UFC fight and win against Andre Gusmao at UFC 87. Bonnar’s last fight was a win against Eric Schaefer at UFC 77. Jones is a JUCO National Wrestling Champion but has most of his wins by KO. On paper this should be a fun fight. Bonnar has moved his camp to Vegas and is now training with Forrest Griffin. Jones has a 4.5” reach advantage. Jones is the 3rd youngest fighter in the UFC.
R1- Jones got a good judo throw take down early in the round but couldn’t hold position. Jones got another take down and Bonnar again got to his feet. Jones hit Bonnar with a belly to back suplex and when Bonnar got up he hit him with a spinning back fist and then jumped on top of Bonnar. Bonnar is cut on his forehead. Jones landed a good knee. Jones ended the round with a take down. Jones looked great in this round. 10-9 in favor of Jones.
R2- This round was a lot closer but Jones landed 3 take downs and the stand up was relatively even. Jones 20-18.
R3- Bonnar is the aggressor in this round and Jones looks to be tiring. Bonnar tried for a take down and got it reversed. Jones almost got caught in a triangle. Bonnar took this round but Jones will win this fight 29-28. The 3rd decision of the night but the first unanimous one. Jones definitely has a lot of talent, I look forward to his next fight.
Judges score cards say: 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 in favor of Jones.

Machida was last seen taking apart Tito Ortiz in a unanimous decision victory and Silva got a Round One TKO victory over Antonio Mendes. Both fights were at UFC 84. Silva has finished all but one of his opponents. Silva looks like he came to fight. Machida is called the “most elusive fighter in UFC history.”
R1- Machida hits some strikes early then they clinch and Machida hits a low blow. Machida got a quick take down after they re-started but he gave up his spot. Lyoto hit a big left hand and Silva went down. Lyoto caught Silva with a big right and knocked him down again. Great counter punching so far for Machida. In the closing seconds of the round Machida pushes Silva down and then jumps on top of him very quickly for a couple of strikes and the bell rings for time and then Silva just lays there and doesn’t get up to go back to his corner. It looked like the first punch from Machida knocked his head back into the canvas and knocked him out. Looks like he was knocked out more from the punch then from his head hitting the mat.
Machida looked great in this fight. He just earned himself a shot at Rashad Evans. Who would have thought that we would have 3 decisions and 1 KO so far and the KO would be for Machida?

Welterweight Title Fight- Georges St Pierre © (17-2) vs. BJ Penn (13-4-1)
Champion versus Champion. UFC stats say Penn has never been knocked down and that he lands 61% of his lead jabs (UFC average is around 30%). GSP lands 75% of his take down attempts (UFC average is 45%) and he defends 85% of his opponents take downs (UFC average is 55%). BJ is looking to be the first UFC fighter to hold belts at the same time in different weight divisions. Penn gets a big reaction from the crowd as he comes to the ring. GSP gets more of a mixed reaction from the crowd. GSP won their first match-up by Decision after getting dominated in the first round by BJ Penn. GSP has a 6” reach advantage.
R1- Very even as GSP works the first couple of minutes trying to get a take down but BJ continues to deny him. GSP takes the first round by controlling where the fight went and landing a few more strikes. 10-9 GSP but not much damage done on either guy.
R2- Penn hit a good left hand in the first 30 seconds of round two. GSP finally got a take down one minute into the round after struggling the entire first round to try and get one but failing. GSP lands some Ground and Pound and passes guard and lands some more G&P. GSP is hitting some good elbows and the crowd rewards him with a “GSP” chant. GSP dominated this round and is up 20-18 so far.
R3- GSP lands some strikes to start the round and BJs nose is bloodied. GSP powers through another take down. BJ took some offense and some hammer fists and then got back to his feet but GSP got another take down. GSP lands some good strikes towards the end of the round. GSP is in control at 30-27. Penn is going to need a knockout or submission if he wants to win this one.
R4- GSP landed some early strikes and then got another take down. Starting in the second round GSP has done what he wanted to do. GSP is landing some good Ground and Pound. GSP was just all over BJ in this round. This was a 10-8 round for GSP. I’ve got GSP up 40-35 right now with one round left. Herb Dean wants the doctor to look at BJ and Dean stops the fight. It looks like in the replay that BJ’s corner stopped the fight.
What a dominate performance by GSP. This victory quickly catapults GSP into same stratosphere as Fedor and Anderson as the top Pound for Pound fighters in the world right now.

UFC 84 "Ill Will" Re-Cap/Thoughts
UFC 84: "Ill Will"
Lightheavyweight Fight- Thiago Silva (12-0) vs. Antonio Mendes (14-2)
Mendes is on an 11 fight win streak. Silva is undefeated. Mendes has a height and reach advantage.
David Spade is in the house and looks like he has a bottle of something that he snuck in.
R1- Mendes hits a big kick early that floors Silva but he survives. Mendes with another kick and Silva is down again. Mendes in control early. Mendes slips and allows Silva to get the advantage. Silva is controlling the fight on the ground and gets the win via ref stoppage. This just goes to show you what can happen if you just make one mistake as Mendes was in total control until he slipped doing a judo throw and then Silva just ate him up on the ground.
Winner: Thiago Silva via TKO (strikes) R1
Urijah Faber is in the house and they briefly talk about his fight live on Versus next week in what Mike Goldberg calls "the biggest WEC fight ever."
Lightheavyweight Fight: Tito Ortiz (16-5-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (12-0)
There has been a great pure pro wrestling build to this match that featured a war of the words between Tito and Dana White with Lyoto Machida being the man caught in the middle. Ortiz gets a good pop and Machida gets boo'd.
R1- Big but brief "Tito" chant as they feel each other out in the beginning. Ortiz went for a take down but was denied. Not much action. Ortiz unable to take down Machida. Machida with a couple of leg licks but not many strikes at all in this one so far. Machida hit a nice combo kick but Ortiz blocked it. Machida hitting another kick and then took Tito down and got side control and was really beating up on him until the bell rung. Round goes to Machida due to late take down and dominance once he took Ortiz down. Ortiz didn't do any damage in the round although he did control the ring for the first 3 or so minutes but all of his take downs failed.
Chuck Lidell is in the house and gets a pop.
R2- Ortiz missed a take down and got a kick for his trouble. Machida hitting a couple of punches now. Machida with a nice high kick. Tito just seems a step too slow to catch up with Machida. Tito shoots in for a take down but is denied again and Machida is in Tito's guard. They stand back up. Machida hits a knee. Tito stands back and tells Machida to come on. Machida hits two punches to Tito. Tito tried to come back and may have gotten in a kick. This round also goes to Machida as he got in more strikes and ultimately Tito got very little offense in. Tito is cut open. Machida 20 Ortiz 18.
R3- The ref falls down about 45 seconds into the round and gets pop. They clinch and Tito got a couple of shots in but nothing substantial. Ortiz just too slow to take down Machida so far. Ortiz went for a knee but came up short. Ortiz with a clinch and is getting in a couple of shots but can't take Machida down. With a buck 30 left Machida nails Tito with a knee to the body. Tito buckles and Machida reigns down punches. Tito defends and somehow grabs an arm triangle with about half a minute left. It looks like Machida is going to have to tap but he twists out of it and survives the rest of the fight.
Overall, Machida definitely won this fight. 30-27 on my scorecard and on the judges. Tito just wasn't quick enough to catch up to Machida during the fight and couldn't get any take downs. Good showing for Machida as he beat a big name.
Winner: Lyoto Machida by Decision (Unanimous)
Shaquille O'Neal was spotted during the last fight. Jamie Presley was shown during Tito Ortiz's interview (he went out a lot classier than I thought he would. He definitely took the high road).
Silva and Machida are both Light Heavyweights and are both undefeated. Could be a good match-up.
Light Heavyweight Fight- Goran Reljic (7-0) vs. Wilson Gouveia (10-4)
This is Reljic's first fight in the UFC. Gouveia has won 4 straight in the UFC and 10 straight overall since a loss to Keith Jardine. Reljic has a big reach advantage in this fight.
The Rock is at ringside!
R1- Reljic is throwing some nice high kicks. Gouveia is blocking most of them but they've got to hurt. Other than Reljic's kicks the first round was pretty even through the first 3 minutes of the round. Gouveia is getting in some nice punches and Reljic pounces on him and takes him down into his guard to avoid more punishment. Gouveia is in Reljic's guard. Even first round. Reljic got in a bunch of nice kicks and Gouveia came on strong at the end of the round to even things out.
R2- Reljic hits a nice high kick about a minute into the round. Gouveia hits Reljic as he is going for a kick and gets an advantage and takes him down and is pounding on him up against the fence. Reljic gets back to his feet but took a lot of damage. Reljic caught him and is throwing a ton of punches and trying to finish the fight and the ref stops it. Great comeback for Reljic.
Reljic threw some great kicks in this fight. Took a couple of big flurries and withstood and nailed Gouveia with a left to the temple and then took him out. Great debut for Reljic.
Winner: Goran Reljic by TKO (strikes) R2
Heavyweight Fight: Christian Wellisch (9-2) vs. Shane Carwin (8-0)
This was from the pre-show. This is Carwin's UFC debut.
R1- Carwin hits him with a good square punch a little over a minute in and it crumples Wellisch. Hit him right on the chin and his mouthpiece went flying. Nice knockout as the ref steps in and stops the fight.

This would be a huge win for Jardine. This should be a great fight. Jardine gets a mixed reaction and seemed to get mostly boos. Wanderlei gets a good reaction. Both these guys look ready to go.
R1- They trade good to start and Silva is all over Jardine and just destroying him and this is over. Wanderlei Silva just overwhelmed Jardine and looked amazing. Shaq and The Rock are brought to their feet. Jardine is still down. David Spade is shown saying "Holy sh*t". Jardine is a tough guy, he just got caught and then got destroyed. Silva was just an animal.

Middleweight Fight- Ivan Salaverry (12-5-1) vs. Rousimar Palhares (16-1)
This is a fight from the pre-show.
R1- Salaverry hits a kick to start off but immediately gets taken down by Palhares. Palhares quickly gets a full mount. Salaverry gives up his back. Palhares gets an armbar shortly thereafter and he looks real good. Palhares just showed some great BJJ and took this one easily.
Winner: Rousimar Palhares by Submission (Armbar) R1
Joe Rogan interviews Urijah Faber at ringside and also interviews his opponent Jens Pulver. Then they show a hype video for Faber vs. Pulver.
Lightweight Title Fight: BJ Penn (c) (13-4-1) vs. Sean Sherk (36-2-1)
This is the second fight tonight that had a pro wrestling build to it with both guys jawing back and forth mostly focused on Sherk's earlier suspension due to drugs that cost him the Lightweight belt. The fan poll puts BJ Penn at the winner by 55% to 45%.
Jason Statham's in the crowd.
R1- Sherk goes for a quick take down but is denied. Real quick pace to start compared to a lot of the fights tonight. Big "BJ" chant by the crowd. Both guys are throwing pretty good. BJ jabbing a lot. Sherk is throwing some hard punches but BJ is hitting some nice jabs. BJ really starting to control this first round the longer that it goes. Good first round. Sherk is cut under his eye. I think Penn gets the first round as he was hitting his jabs pretty regularly.
R2- They trade pretty good. Sherk seems more active at the beginning of this fight. Good exchanges in the first minute as both guys landing some punches. BJ seems more controlled and Sherk more wild in terms of punches. BJ still landing some good jabs. Sherk has 2 or 3 cuts that he is bleeding out of. Another good round. I think this one was a little closer than the first but i've still got to give it to BJ due to his jabs and the damage that he's done to Sherk.
R3- A little of the same in this round as Sherk comes out strong and then BJ starts to re-gain the advantage throughout the round. They are throwing really good with BJ looking like the more controlled striker and Sherk throwing wild, hard punches. The announcers pick up on a possible right hand injury for Sherk as he's really just using his left and kicking. BJ opens up with an amazing flurry at the end of Round 3. Sherk came off the cage and BJ nailed him with a running knee and then punches and the horn sounded to end the round. And the ref calls the fight. Great finish by BJ Penn.
Winner: BJ Penn by TKO (Strikes) R3
Welterweight Fight- Jon Koppenhaver (6-1) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (9-2)
Another pre-show match.
Yoshida drilled him early with a nice take down and then clamped on a guillotine. And this one was over before it started.

Light Heavyweight Fight- Rameau Sokoudjou (4-2) vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura (11-7)
Decent first round and then right at the end of the round Soko nails Nakamura and pounces on him and can't finish him but the match is called during the break as Nakamura can't continue.
Winner: Rameau Sokoudjou by TKO R1
This was a real good show. A very good Main Event in the Penn/Sherk match. I thought Machida/Ortiz was a good fight, Wanderlei put on an amazing performance, and I really enjoyed Silva/Mendes as well. There were some quick fights but I think Mendes and Silva looked really good in their fights. Reljic also looked really good. It will be interesting to see how some of the young guys like Reljic, Thiago Silva and Loyoto Machida can build on these victories. It will also be interesting to see what happens with Ortiz as he left the door open for a possible return to UFC. They teased GSP/Penn after the Penn/Sherk fight.
Lightheavyweight Fight- Thiago Silva (12-0) vs. Antonio Mendes (14-2)
Mendes is on an 11 fight win streak. Silva is undefeated. Mendes has a height and reach advantage.
David Spade is in the house and looks like he has a bottle of something that he snuck in.
R1- Mendes hits a big kick early that floors Silva but he survives. Mendes with another kick and Silva is down again. Mendes in control early. Mendes slips and allows Silva to get the advantage. Silva is controlling the fight on the ground and gets the win via ref stoppage. This just goes to show you what can happen if you just make one mistake as Mendes was in total control until he slipped doing a judo throw and then Silva just ate him up on the ground.
Winner: Thiago Silva via TKO (strikes) R1
Urijah Faber is in the house and they briefly talk about his fight live on Versus next week in what Mike Goldberg calls "the biggest WEC fight ever."
Lightheavyweight Fight: Tito Ortiz (16-5-1) vs. Lyoto Machida (12-0)
There has been a great pure pro wrestling build to this match that featured a war of the words between Tito and Dana White with Lyoto Machida being the man caught in the middle. Ortiz gets a good pop and Machida gets boo'd.
R1- Big but brief "Tito" chant as they feel each other out in the beginning. Ortiz went for a take down but was denied. Not much action. Ortiz unable to take down Machida. Machida with a couple of leg licks but not many strikes at all in this one so far. Machida hit a nice combo kick but Ortiz blocked it. Machida hitting another kick and then took Tito down and got side control and was really beating up on him until the bell rung. Round goes to Machida due to late take down and dominance once he took Ortiz down. Ortiz didn't do any damage in the round although he did control the ring for the first 3 or so minutes but all of his take downs failed.
Chuck Lidell is in the house and gets a pop.
R2- Ortiz missed a take down and got a kick for his trouble. Machida hitting a couple of punches now. Machida with a nice high kick. Tito just seems a step too slow to catch up with Machida. Tito shoots in for a take down but is denied again and Machida is in Tito's guard. They stand back up. Machida hits a knee. Tito stands back and tells Machida to come on. Machida hits two punches to Tito. Tito tried to come back and may have gotten in a kick. This round also goes to Machida as he got in more strikes and ultimately Tito got very little offense in. Tito is cut open. Machida 20 Ortiz 18.
R3- The ref falls down about 45 seconds into the round and gets pop. They clinch and Tito got a couple of shots in but nothing substantial. Ortiz just too slow to take down Machida so far. Ortiz went for a knee but came up short. Ortiz with a clinch and is getting in a couple of shots but can't take Machida down. With a buck 30 left Machida nails Tito with a knee to the body. Tito buckles and Machida reigns down punches. Tito defends and somehow grabs an arm triangle with about half a minute left. It looks like Machida is going to have to tap but he twists out of it and survives the rest of the fight.
Overall, Machida definitely won this fight. 30-27 on my scorecard and on the judges. Tito just wasn't quick enough to catch up to Machida during the fight and couldn't get any take downs. Good showing for Machida as he beat a big name.
Winner: Lyoto Machida by Decision (Unanimous)
Shaquille O'Neal was spotted during the last fight. Jamie Presley was shown during Tito Ortiz's interview (he went out a lot classier than I thought he would. He definitely took the high road).
Silva and Machida are both Light Heavyweights and are both undefeated. Could be a good match-up.
Light Heavyweight Fight- Goran Reljic (7-0) vs. Wilson Gouveia (10-4)
This is Reljic's first fight in the UFC. Gouveia has won 4 straight in the UFC and 10 straight overall since a loss to Keith Jardine. Reljic has a big reach advantage in this fight.
The Rock is at ringside!
R1- Reljic is throwing some nice high kicks. Gouveia is blocking most of them but they've got to hurt. Other than Reljic's kicks the first round was pretty even through the first 3 minutes of the round. Gouveia is getting in some nice punches and Reljic pounces on him and takes him down into his guard to avoid more punishment. Gouveia is in Reljic's guard. Even first round. Reljic got in a bunch of nice kicks and Gouveia came on strong at the end of the round to even things out.
R2- Reljic hits a nice high kick about a minute into the round. Gouveia hits Reljic as he is going for a kick and gets an advantage and takes him down and is pounding on him up against the fence. Reljic gets back to his feet but took a lot of damage. Reljic caught him and is throwing a ton of punches and trying to finish the fight and the ref stops it. Great comeback for Reljic.
Reljic threw some great kicks in this fight. Took a couple of big flurries and withstood and nailed Gouveia with a left to the temple and then took him out. Great debut for Reljic.
Winner: Goran Reljic by TKO (strikes) R2
Heavyweight Fight: Christian Wellisch (9-2) vs. Shane Carwin (8-0)
This was from the pre-show. This is Carwin's UFC debut.
R1- Carwin hits him with a good square punch a little over a minute in and it crumples Wellisch. Hit him right on the chin and his mouthpiece went flying. Nice knockout as the ref steps in and stops the fight.

UFC Wired 5/10 Re-Cap
Light Heavyweight Fight- Rashad Evans (14-0) vs. Sean Salmon (9-1)- UFC Fight Night 8- 1/25/07
R1- Salmon goes for a Karate Kid type move early that looks hilarious. Not much contact in the first minute. Neither guy really looks like they want to fight early. Evans is content to counter punch. They tie up 2 minutes in and Salmon takes Evans down and gets half guard. Salmon got side control but Evans quickly got to his feet. Salmon gets a couple of punches in on the cage. Salmon grabs a leg and takes down Evans again. Salmon is landing some blows on Evans. Round 1 easily goes to Salmon as Rashad didn’t really do anything and got taken down twice and sustained more damage.
R2- Salmon comes in and slips and Evans hits a knee and then attacks and gets his first advantage of the fight. After this Evans looks like the aggressor as he’s started to take control of the ring and then he just DESTROYS Salmon with a kick to the head. Awesome finish to the fight after a very poor first round by Evans. Evans started really slow, seemed very nervous but after he got that one knee his demeanor kind of changed and then he just nailed the finish.
Winner: Rashad Evans via KO (kick) R2
Light Heavyweight Fight- Thiago Silva (11-0) vs. Houston Alexander (8-1)- UFC 78- 11/17/07
R1- Alexander gets a really strong ovation at introductions. Alexander is stalking Silva early and Silva is trying to jab and kick to keep Alexander away. Silva is tying up when Alexander gets close. Alexander slams Silva but Silva reverses it and takes Alexander down. Silva’s got full mount. Silva getting in some decent shots, Alexander showing some good defense as he’s not opening himself up for damage. And just as I say that Silva lands 5 or 6 punches. And Sliva hits 5 or 6 more and the ref stops it. Real impressive fight for Silva as he got Alexander down on the mat and finished him.
Winner: Thiago Silva via TKO (strikes) R1
Light Heavyweight Fight- Chuck Liddell (20-4) vs. Keith Jardine (12-4-1)- UFC 76- 9/22/07
R1- This is the battle of the cool nicknames. “The Dean of Mean” versus “The Iceman”. Liddell gets a superstar intro, which is expected, so it will be interesting to see how Jardine can hang with him. This looks like it’s going to be fun as we are only 20 seconds in and both guys are swinging. Both guys also have awkward styles compared to most MMA guys. Liddell definitely the aggressor and landing more shots early. Liddell looks real good early. Jardine hits a couple of kicks trying to slow down Liddell a little. Liddell is controlling the octagon. Jardine starting to even out the fight a little and is gaining more confidence. Both guys really throwing and hitting good shots on each other. Jardine is really effectively using kicks to slow down Liddell a little bit. Just as I say that Liddell gets a good combo in on Jardine. Liddell really pushing the pace towards the end of the round and hitting some shots and stalking Jardine. Really entertaining first round. Liddell takes this one although Jardine looked good once he got settled. Liddell finished strong just making this round easier for the judges to score.
R2- Jardine looks a lot more comfortable starting this round out as he takes the middle of the octagon. Jardine nails a shot and Liddell went down but he got to his feet pretty quickly. Jardine with a big body kick. Jardine really taking over here in the second round as the body language of both guys are really showing it. Jardine is bleeding down the side of his head. Chuck seems to be trying to take back the octagon. Chuck counter punches and Jardine goes down to his knees. Chuck hits with a knee that wobbles Jardine but Jardine is back up. Liddell’s cardio looks a lot better at this point and it’s helping him get back into this round. I think Jardine took this round due to the first 3 minutes but Liddell did a good job seizing control back and getting back into the round. Liddell definitely has the momentum going into Round 3 as Jardine looks spent.
R3- Jardine starts out this round like round 2 as he takes the center of the octagon. Liddell stalks down Jardine but he’s getting nailed with leg kicks. Jardine with a good combo leg kick and right hook. Jardine with a couple more kicks. Chuck starting to stalk Jardine. This fight is real even right now so I think the guy that takes this last 2 minutes will take this fight. Jardine is continuing to hit leg kicks and seems to be in control. Both guys with a flurry to finish the fight as Lidell lands some good punches.
Really good and entertaining fight. Almost too close to call. I’m going to give this to Jardine as I felt he won rounds 2 and 3. Round 3 was a lot closer but he controlled the round and landed more body kicks and strikes.
Jardine 29-28, Liddell 29-28, and Jardine 29-28. Very just decision.
