UFC 113: Machida vs Shogun 2

The Main Event tonight is a re-match for the Light Heavyweight Title between Lyoto Machida and Shogun Rua. It is a re-match from their controversial decision last year in which the judges unanimously declared Machida the winner but most of the popular opinion said Rua should have won the fight. Josh Koscheck will fight Paul Daley in a #1 Contenders match with the winner going on to face champion Georges St-Pierre at a later date and also coach against him in the next version of The Ultimate Fighter. Kimbo Slice is in action tonight and Patrick Cote makes his return from an injury.
Middleweight Fight- Patrick Cote (14-5) vs. Alan Belcher (14-5)
Belcher's last fight was at UFC 107 in December where he disposed of Wilson Gouveia in the first round. This is Cote's first fight since getting injured in a freak accident in his title shot against Anderson Silva. The fans are solidly behind Canadian Cote in this one. I picked Belcher in this one but only because of the lay-off that Cote had. It will be interesting to see how Cote does after 18 months of not fighting.
R1- Belcher is throwing kicks early and then catches Cote with a low blow. Both guys are very active early and are landing strikes. Cote grabbed a Belcher kick and took him down. Cote went for a kimura but Belcher pulled out and was able to take top position. Belcher landed a couple of elbows and stayed on top until the end of the round. Cote sustained a small cut near his eye near the end of the round. Belcher 10-9.

R2- Belcher came out for the round without his mouthpiece and the ref briefly had to stop the fight. Cote landed some good punches to start the round. Belcher had to clinch to stop the onslaught. They traded some strikes against the cage and Cote got a take down at the mid-way point of the round. Belcher got back to his feet and basically did what in pro wrestling would be called a front piledriver as he picked up Cote and a pile driver type position and dropped him face first onto the mat. Belcher took Cote's back and Cote had to tap. Great win for Belcher. It looked like Cote was turning the tide until that pile driver.

Heavyweight Fight- Kimbo Slice (4-1) vs. Matt Mitrione (1-0)
Both guys won fights on The Ultimate Fighter Finale back in December. Kimbo defeated Houston Alexander by decision in an ugly fight and Mitrione knocked out Marcus Jones ten seconds into the second round. Mitrione comes out to Simple Man from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Mitrione trains with Pat Berry, Eric Schafer, Jake O'Brien and Ben Rothwell. Kimbo gets a huge reaction. He should come out to Street Fighting Man by the Rolling Stones but he doesn't. Kimbo is training with American Top Team. Mitrione has a 5" reach advantage.

R1- Kimbo hit a right hand early and then Mitrione missed a kick and Kimbo tackle slammed him to the ground and then picked up Mitrione again and slammed him another time. Fans are going nuts. Mitrione grabs a quick triangle choke and Kimbo picks him up and tried to drop him down again. Kimbo broke free of the move and we've only fought for a minute and fifteen seconds. Kimbo had side control but is just doing nothing on the ground and Mitrione got back to his feet. Kimbo picked Mitrione up and Mitrione grabbed onto the top of the cage briefly to minimize the impact of Kimbo's slam. Mitrione goes for an triangle choke but didn't get it. Kimbo finally just backs off and let's Mitrione up with about a minute left in the round. Mitrione hit Kimbo with a knee and then grabbed him in a clinch and landed another knee to the head. Kimbo came in for a right hand and Mitrione kicked Kimbo's leg out from under him. Mitrione grabbed a choke on the ground. Kimbo looked like he was going to tap but Mitrione let the hold go to try and get a better grip on it. Fun first round. Mitrione 10-9.
R2- Mitrione is hurting Kimbo early in this round with leg kicks. Mitrione landed some good strikes with three minutes left. Kimbo tried to get a take down but couldn't and Mitrione landed a knee to Kimbo's side and Kimbo is looking like he's wilting. Mitrione is landing knees to Kimbo's side and legs. Mitrione has the mount and is landing strikes. Mitrione tried for a kimura but let it go after cranking back on it. Mitrione continued landing strikes and the ref stepped in. Mitrione really controlled Kimbo. Kimbo's grappling and wrestling is still just so rudimentary. I'm interested to see where Mitrione goes from here. He has some talent but both of his wins are against guys that really have no MMA experience.

Lightweight Fight- Sam Stout (16-5-1) vs. Jeremy Stephens (17-5)
Stephens took out Justin Buchholz at UFC Fight Night 19 by TKO in the first round. Stout beat Joe Lauzon by Unanimous Decision in January (with one judge scoring the fight 30-26). Both guys say they are going to stand and bang. This looks like a fun fight on paper. Stout is from Ontario so he is the crowd favorite in this one. Shawn Thompkins is in Stout's corner.
R1- Stephens landed an early strike and caught a leg kick and got a take down. So much for standing and banging. Stout quickly got back to his feet. Stephens hit a good left that landed right in the eye of Stout and looked like it cut him. Stephens landed a good right hand. Stephens looks really good early. Stout landed a couple of body punches but Stephens retaliated with a big right hand that briefly floored Stout and Stephens then landed a knee. Stout lands some leg kicks and Stephens threw a big spinning back fist that was partially deflected. Good first round and they did stand and bang after that initial take down. Stephens 10-9.
R2- Stout lands some leg kicks to start the round and then got one caught and Stephens landed a punch as he held his leg which briefly floored Stout. Stout grabbed a kimura as they clinched on the cage but could not get it and the fight returned to the feet. Stout is very active this round and throwing a lot of strikes. Stout continues to land leg kicks and has slowed Stephens down. Stephens landed a couple of good strikes toward the end of the round. Really close round. Stephens might have stolen the round with the strikes he landed late but I scored it for Stout making it 19-19 going into the final frame on my score card.
R3- Stephens lands some strikes early in the round. Stephens grabbed a quick clinch and landed a knee. Stout looked like he landed a kick to the calf of Stephens and Stephens bent over in pain. Stout was able to land some strikes and got on top of Stephens and landed some elbows. Stephens got a take down in the last twenty seconds but Stout popped right back up. Good fight. I've got Stout winning the final round thus taking the fight 29-28 on my score card. I could see this fight going either way.

Joe Doerkson vs. Tom Lawlor
After the Stephens/Stout fight they cut right into this one with no warning. Lawlor's hair is black and he has a Dan Severn mustache.
R1- Lawlor hit a left and knocked Doerkson down. Lawlor hurting Doerkson with strikes. Both guys swinging away and bloody. Lawler landed a punch that wobbled Doerkson but came in with another wild punch and missed. Crazy round. Doerkson started to go to the wrong corner after the round ended. Lawlor 10-9.
R2- Doerkson is the aggressor early in this round. Lawlor looks like he punched himself out in the first round. Doerkson took Lawlor's back and tapped him out with a Rear Naked Choke. Good comeback win for Doerkson.

Welterweight Fight- Josh Koscheck (16-4) vs. Paul Daley (23-8-2)
Daley has defeated Martin Kampmann and Dustin Hazelett since entering the UFC. Both fights were stopped in the first round via TKO (strikes). Koscheck is coming off of back to back wins against Frank Trigg and Anthony Johnson. Koscheck comes out to Higher Ground by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Daley has a 3" reach advantage. The winner of this fight will coach against Georges St-Pierre on the next edition of The Ultimate Fighter and will then receive a title shot. They don't touch gloves. Koscheck looks like he has a bigger height advantage then what was listed. From an entertainment stand point I would like to see Koscheck as a TUF coach.
R1- Koscheck got a take down after a minute of feeling each other out. Daley got back to his feet and Koscheck slammed him back down. Koscheck staying on top but not really doing any damage. Koscheck took Daley's back and tried to grab a Rear Naked but Daley got back to his feet and hit an illegal knee to Koscheck. They ended clinched up against the cage. Koscheck took the round 10-9. No point was deducted, so a good piece of referring.

R2- Koscheck got a take down early in the round. Koscheck not doing much on top but is maintaining position. Koscheck again took Daley's back. Koscheck 20-18.
R3- Daley landed a couple of strikes and then Koscheck clinched him up against the cage. Koscheck got the take down with three and a half minutes left in the round. Looks like Koscheck is going to grind this one out in unspectacular fashion. Well I think it's obvious that if you are learning MMA don't go to Dan Hardy and Paul Daley's camp to learn wrestling and jiu jitsu. Koscheck 30-27 in a boring fight. Smart game plan by Koscheck.
Post-Fight Paul Daley punched Josh Koscheck after the fight. Daley just turned Koscheck into a sympathetic figure. What a disgrace.

Koscheck gets on the microphone and heels the crowd about hockey and GSP and then invites them to an after party.
Light Heavyweight Title Fight- Lyoto Machida (c) (16-0) vs. Shogun Rua (18-4)
Goldberg brings up a good stat. Shogun hit Machida more times in their last fight then the last 7 opponents did in Machida's other UFC fights. Machida broke his hand in the last fight and Rogan brings up the point that the hand hasn't been tested. In the 28 re-matches in UFC history the winner has won 13 times, the loser has won 13 times and twice it was a draw.
R1- Shogun the more aggressive fighter out of the gate but got taken down by Machida. Shogun quickly got back to his feet. Shogun pushed forward and landed a strike or two but got taken down again. Shogun again quickly got to his feet but did eat a knee to the body. Machida landed a knee but Shogun hit a strike and quickly mounted Machida and finished the fight. Wow. Fantastic finish by Shogun and it came out of nowhere. Shogun knocked him out on the ground and was already getting up to celebrate before the ref stepped in to call for the finish.

Welterweight Fight- Marcus Davis vs. Jonathan Goulet
This is from the pre-show. This fight is brought to you by Shogun Rua and his quick finish of Lyoto Machida. This is a fight I want to see so Thank You to Shogun despite him making me wrong on my prediction. Goulet has some crazy stuff going on in his hair.
R1- Goulet landed a quick head kick and then got a take down but Davis bounced right back to his feet. Goulet landed a knee to the body but in doing so he also ate a punch that wobbled him. Goulet went for a take down and Davis grabbed a guillotine and pulled guard. Goulet fought hard and finally popped his head out of the submission. Davis threw a leg and got taken down. Goulet landed a couple strikes. Davis got back to his feet but Goulet took him back down. Goulet probably stole that round despite Davis having a sub attempt and landing the best strike of the round.
R2- Davis hit a good right hand that knocked Goulet to his knees. Davis jumped on top and landed a couple of strikes but Goulet got back to his feet. Goulet is busted open. Davis landed something and Goulet just dropped like a ton of bricks. He landed a right and then a big left hook.

UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun

Lyoto Machida makes his first defense of his Light Heavyweight Title tonight against Shogun Rua. Cain Velasquez will try to stay undefeated when he takes on Ben Rothwell.
Welterweight Fight (Catchweight of 176)- Anthony Johnson (7-2) vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida (11-3)
Yoshida subbed Brandon Wolff at UFC 98. Anthony Johnson TKO’d Luigi Fioravanti at Fight Night 17. Yoshida is a 4th degree Judo Black Belt. Johnson missed weight for this fight by six pounds. Joe Rogan says he’s been rumored to walk around as big as 220 so his days as a Welterweight might be numbered. Johnson has been training with Cung Le and has Le and Josh Thomson in his corner. Johnson has a 3” height, 8” reach and 6 lb weight advantage.
R1- Johnson landed some punches early in the clinch and then decked him with a right hand and this one is over. Rogan pointed out that these guys looked like they were in different weight divisions. Johnson looked great but he missed weight and he has got to move up in weight if he can’t make the cut to 170.
Winner: Anthony Johnson by TKO (Punches) R1 0:41
Post-fight Johnson said that he had gotten heavy because of a knee injury that he sustained in training for Matt Brown previously. He owned up for not making weight but said that he’s not planning on moving up weight classes yet.

Lightweight Fight- Spencer Fisher (24-4) vs. Joe Stevenson (35-10)
Fisher is coming off of a unanimous decision victory over Caol Uno in a very close fight. Fisher is on a 3 fight win streak. Stevenson is coming off of a win over Nate Diaz by Unanimous Decision at the Ultimate Fighter 9 Finale. Stevenson is currently training with Greg Jackson and has him in his corner for the fight. Stevenson is a jiu jitsu and judo black belt.
R1- Stevenson opened up a cut near Spencer’s eye. Stevenson fights hard for a take down but Spencer stuffs him and the ref breaks up the clinch. Spencer is blinking a lot and having some issues with the blood in his eye. Stevenson finally gets a take down with about half a minute left in the round. Joe lands some good Ground and Pound as Spencer turtled up. Stevenson takes this round and is up 10-9.
R2- Stevenson got a take down in the second minute of the round. Stevenson lands some good elbows in half guard. Stevenson just starts destroying Spencer with elbows and Herb Dean steps in and puts a stop to the fight. Stevenson has looked really good under the direction of Greg Jackson.
They announce the win as tapout due to strikes.

Middleweight Fight- Yushin Okami vs. Chael Sonnen
The Dean of Draws Yushin Okami makes it onto the PPV in a televised pre-PPV fight. Okami’s only loss in UFC is to Rich Franklin. Matt Lindland is in Sonnen’s corner.
R1- Sonnen gets a take down in the first minute. Okami keeps getting up but Sonnen keeps taking him back down. Okami gets back to his feet about half way through the round. Sonnen got another take down with about a minute left in the round. Sonnen takes the first round 10-9.
R2- This was a pretty even round but Sonnen seemed to start getting the better of Okami towards the end of the round.
R3- Sonnen got a take down about half way through the round and landed some Ground and Pound but Okami got back up. Okami grabbed Sonnen with a kimura in full guard but could not keep it as Sonnen landed some body punches. Sonnen is going to win this fight by decision. Really good win for Sonnen.

Catchweight Fight- Josh Neer (25-8-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (29-6)
Tibau comes out to “Iron Man” but doesn’t have any spiked shoulder pads. Tibau is coming off a decision loss to Melvin Guillard. Tibau is fighting out of American Top Team and is a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Neer is coming off a decision loss to Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101. Neer came in at 156.5 lbs and Tibau at 157 so that’s why this is a catchweight fight.
R1- Tibau got a wicked slam early but Neer got back to his feet. Tibau got another big take down/slam but Neer got up again after a short amount of time on the ground. Tibau got a third take down but Neer pushed him off when he tried to pass. Tibau got a fourth take down. Neer got to his feet and Tibau tried to grab a guillotine but Neer quickly slipped out. Tibau took this round 10-9.
Jerry Ferrera (turtle from Entourage) was shown in the crowd during the intermission between rounds. Jeremy Piven (also from Entourage) was shown a bit later.
R2- Tibau starts off the round with another powerful take down but Neer again gets up quickly. Tibau is taking Neer down at will but is not able to hold him down. Tibau was able to get a mount with half of the round left. Neer gave up his back to get out of mount and Tibau tried to get an arm bar but couldn’t and Neer ended up on top briefly. I’ve got Tibau up 20-18 but he seems to be fading a bit.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are at the show tonight.
R3- Tibau started off the round with a take down. Neer was able to stuff three take downs. Tibau gets another take down with two minutes left in the fight but couldn’t hold him down. Tibau finishes the fight with yet another take down. Tibau really dominated this fight with take downs. The only round that was close was the final one.
Judges score cards say: 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28
Winner: Gleison Tibau by Decision (Unanimous)
Heavyweight Fight- Cain Velasquez (6-0) vs. Ben Rothwell (30-6)
Rothwell is making his UFC debut and is a former IFL Heavyweight Champion. Velasquez is a Top 10 Heavyweight and is coming off a big unanimous decision win over Cheick Kongo at UFC 99. Rothwell has a 3” height and 3” reach advantage and has a huge weight advantage of 27 lbs. Velasquez is from California and is a big fan favorite in this fight. Rothwell has won 14 of his last 15 fights and was 9-0 in IFL fights.
R1- Cain got a take down in the first 30 seconds but Rothwell stood back up without taking any damage. Cain got another take down at the two minute mark of the round. Cain landed a couple of punches before Rothwell got to his feet. Cain got Rothwell down again and landed some good punches and looked like he opened up a cut on Rothwell. Cain is starting to land some good punches. Cain landed some hammer fists and then peppered Rothwell with several punches. Cain is just dominating Rothwell so far. Somehow Rothwell survives that round but he took a beating in the second part of the round. 10-8 round in favor of Cain.
R2- Cain opens up the round with a take down and lands some good shots. Cain lands some big shots against the cage and Mazzagatti steps in and stops the fight. Rothwell is upset. Definitely an awkward stoppage but Cain was completely dominating the fight up to that point. Not a good time to stop the fight by Mazzagatti as Cain was landing some good punches but Rothwell was in the process of getting back to his feet.
Winner: Cain Velasquez by TKO (Punches) R2 0:58

Light Heavyweight Title Fight: Lyoto Machida © (15-0) vs. Shogun Rua (18-3)
Lyoto has had 15 career fights and has never been knocked down. He’s also never lost a round in any of his UFC fights and has absorbed fewer strikes than any other fighter in UFC history. Shogun has also never been knocked down in the UFC and has a 46% strike accuracy percentage (versus 35% of the average fighter). Machida gets a really good reception from the crowd.
R1- Machida hits a few knees early. Shogun clinched Machida a couple of times but didn’t land anything significant. Really close round with neither guy really having an advantage. Shogun was the aggressor but in a title fight I’ve got to give the benefit of the scoring to the champion if neither fighter looked like they won the round. So I’ve got 10-9 Machida (it would be a 10-10 if it was allowed to be scored that way).
R2- Machida landed a couple of strikes in the opening minute. Machida landed a punch on Shogun and knocked him off balance and later hit a leg kick that did the same thing. Machida hit a side kick at the two minute mark but Shogun countered with one of his own. Shogun clinched Machida and landed some knees on Machida’s legs. Another close round that I’ve got going to Machida. Machida 20-18 on my score card.
R3- Shogun opens up with a body kick. Machida counters with a combination. They had two good exchanges where it looked like both guys hit what they went for. Shogun is landing some good leg kicks in this round. Machida landed some punches and Shogun hit a counter as well. Really close round that Machida probably stole with that last flurry. Machida 30-27 on my score card.
R4- Shogun is landing some leg kicks early in the round. Machida slipped and Shogun quickly rushed in for a take down but couldn’t get it. Not a lot of action in this round but Shogun definitely got the better of the little strikes that hit in this round. Machida 39-37 so far.
R5- Shogun continues with the onslaught of leg kicks. But I really don’t think leg kicks should win you a championship unless they are devastating and if they are devastating. Machida landed some knees and Shogun responded with a kick. Shogun landed a couple of strikes with about a minute and a half left in the fight. Close round but I think Shogun did enough to win this round. I’ve got this fight as Machida 48 Shogun 47. Really close fight with 5 very competitive and close rounds. Shogun fought a good fight but I don’t think he did enough to unseat the champion. I could definitely see a split decision by the judges.

R3- Sonnen got a take down about half way through the round and landed some Ground and Pound but Okami got back up. Okami grabbed Sonnen with a kimura in full guard but could not keep it as Sonnen landed some body punches. Sonnen is going to win this fight by decision. Really good win for Sonnen.

Catchweight Fight- Josh Neer (25-8-1) vs. Gleison Tibau (29-6)
Tibau comes out to “Iron Man” but doesn’t have any spiked shoulder pads. Tibau is coming off a decision loss to Melvin Guillard. Tibau is fighting out of American Top Team and is a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Neer is coming off a decision loss to Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 101. Neer came in at 156.5 lbs and Tibau at 157 so that’s why this is a catchweight fight.
R1- Tibau got a wicked slam early but Neer got back to his feet. Tibau got another big take down/slam but Neer got up again after a short amount of time on the ground. Tibau got a third take down but Neer pushed him off when he tried to pass. Tibau got a fourth take down. Neer got to his feet and Tibau tried to grab a guillotine but Neer quickly slipped out. Tibau took this round 10-9.
Jerry Ferrera (turtle from Entourage) was shown in the crowd during the intermission between rounds. Jeremy Piven (also from Entourage) was shown a bit later.
R2- Tibau starts off the round with another powerful take down but Neer again gets up quickly. Tibau is taking Neer down at will but is not able to hold him down. Tibau was able to get a mount with half of the round left. Neer gave up his back to get out of mount and Tibau tried to get an arm bar but couldn’t and Neer ended up on top briefly. I’ve got Tibau up 20-18 but he seems to be fading a bit.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are at the show tonight.
R3- Tibau started off the round with a take down. Neer was able to stuff three take downs. Tibau gets another take down with two minutes left in the fight but couldn’t hold him down. Tibau finishes the fight with yet another take down. Tibau really dominated this fight with take downs. The only round that was close was the final one.

Heavyweight Fight- Cain Velasquez (6-0) vs. Ben Rothwell (30-6)
Rothwell is making his UFC debut and is a former IFL Heavyweight Champion. Velasquez is a Top 10 Heavyweight and is coming off a big unanimous decision win over Cheick Kongo at UFC 99. Rothwell has a 3” height and 3” reach advantage and has a huge weight advantage of 27 lbs. Velasquez is from California and is a big fan favorite in this fight. Rothwell has won 14 of his last 15 fights and was 9-0 in IFL fights.
R1- Cain got a take down in the first 30 seconds but Rothwell stood back up without taking any damage. Cain got another take down at the two minute mark of the round. Cain landed a couple of punches before Rothwell got to his feet. Cain got Rothwell down again and landed some good punches and looked like he opened up a cut on Rothwell. Cain is starting to land some good punches. Cain landed some hammer fists and then peppered Rothwell with several punches. Cain is just dominating Rothwell so far. Somehow Rothwell survives that round but he took a beating in the second part of the round. 10-8 round in favor of Cain.
R2- Cain opens up the round with a take down and lands some good shots. Cain lands some big shots against the cage and Mazzagatti steps in and stops the fight. Rothwell is upset. Definitely an awkward stoppage but Cain was completely dominating the fight up to that point. Not a good time to stop the fight by Mazzagatti as Cain was landing some good punches but Rothwell was in the process of getting back to his feet.
Winner: Cain Velasquez by TKO (Punches) R2 0:58

Light Heavyweight Title Fight: Lyoto Machida © (15-0) vs. Shogun Rua (18-3)
Lyoto has had 15 career fights and has never been knocked down. He’s also never lost a round in any of his UFC fights and has absorbed fewer strikes than any other fighter in UFC history. Shogun has also never been knocked down in the UFC and has a 46% strike accuracy percentage (versus 35% of the average fighter). Machida gets a really good reception from the crowd.
R1- Machida hits a few knees early. Shogun clinched Machida a couple of times but didn’t land anything significant. Really close round with neither guy really having an advantage. Shogun was the aggressor but in a title fight I’ve got to give the benefit of the scoring to the champion if neither fighter looked like they won the round. So I’ve got 10-9 Machida (it would be a 10-10 if it was allowed to be scored that way).
R2- Machida landed a couple of strikes in the opening minute. Machida landed a punch on Shogun and knocked him off balance and later hit a leg kick that did the same thing. Machida hit a side kick at the two minute mark but Shogun countered with one of his own. Shogun clinched Machida and landed some knees on Machida’s legs. Another close round that I’ve got going to Machida. Machida 20-18 on my score card.
R3- Shogun opens up with a body kick. Machida counters with a combination. They had two good exchanges where it looked like both guys hit what they went for. Shogun is landing some good leg kicks in this round. Machida landed some punches and Shogun hit a counter as well. Really close round that Machida probably stole with that last flurry. Machida 30-27 on my score card.
R4- Shogun is landing some leg kicks early in the round. Machida slipped and Shogun quickly rushed in for a take down but couldn’t get it. Not a lot of action in this round but Shogun definitely got the better of the little strikes that hit in this round. Machida 39-37 so far.
R5- Shogun continues with the onslaught of leg kicks. But I really don’t think leg kicks should win you a championship unless they are devastating and if they are devastating. Machida landed some knees and Shogun responded with a kick. Shogun landed a couple of strikes with about a minute and a half left in the fight. Close round but I think Shogun did enough to win this round. I’ve got this fight as Machida 48 Shogun 47. Really close fight with 5 very competitive and close rounds. Shogun fought a good fight but I don’t think he did enough to unseat the champion. I could definitely see a split decision by the judges.

UFC 97: "Redemption" Re-Cap
UFC 97: Redemption

This show is highlighted by Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva defending against Thales Leites and Chuck Liddell taking on Shogun Rua. The Shogun/Liddell fight will be particularly interesting because whoever losses that fight is pretty much finished in the Light Heavyweight Division for the near future. Silva is looking to break the tie for most consecutive wins inside the Octagon (he is currently sitting at 8 straight wins). Cheick Kongo will also fight Antoni Hardonk in Heavyweight Fight.
Light Heavyweight Fight- Steve Cantwell (7-1) vs. Luiz Cane (10-1)
Cantwell is a former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion. Cantwell fought on the “Fight for the Troops” show in November and destroyed Razak Al-Hassan. His previous fight was an August 2008 win over Brian Stann by TKO for the WEC Title. Cane is coming off a win over Sokoudjou in which Sokoudjou gassed and then Cane finished him off. Both of these guys are borderline Top 10 Light Heavyweight Fighters. Cane is a Muay Thai specialist and Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Cantwell is a Jiu Jitsu Brown Belt with Kick Boxing experience. This should be an explosive fight.
R1- Cane looks good early as he landing some strikes and stalking Cantwell early. As the round went on Cantwell seemed to become more confident but Cane definitely looks like the stronger fighter in this fight. Cane is leading 10-9 after one round on my score card.
R2- Cane controlled the early part of the round but Cantwell really started to score points in the middle of the round. Really close round that I’m giving to Cantwell so it’s 19-19 going into the final round.
R3- Cane landed a good combo in the first minute. Cane hit another good combo around the 4 minute mark of the round. Cane takes round three in a fairly close fight 29-28. Not a great fight for either guy, both guys fought hard and looked pretty good but both will really need to elevate their games to get up to the next level in UFC.
Judges score cards say: 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 in favor of Cane.
Winner: Luiz Cane by Decision (Unanimous)
Heavyweight Fight- Cheick Kongo (23-4-1) vs. Antoni Hardonk (8-4)
Kongo is coming off of an impressive first round win over Mostapha Al Turk at UFC 92. Hardonk also fought at UFC 92 and won in the second round against Mike Wessel and is currently on a 3 fight win streak. Ernesto Hoost is in Hardonk’s corner for the fight. Kongo has a 4” reach advantage.
R1- Kongo grabbed Hardonk’s leg and pushed him down halfway through the round but the fight was stood back up. After they stood back up Kongo got in some good shots and then got a take down with about a minute left in the round. Kongo is up 10 to 9 after the first round.
R2- Kongo got Hardonk down quickly in this round and jumped on top for some Ground and Pound. Hardonk is bloodied up and the ref steps in to stop the fight. Really good showing by Kongo. It took him a while to get started but he looked impressive after he got the fight to the ground just like he did in his last outing.

Light Heavyweight Fight- Krzysztof Soszynski (17-9-1) vs. Brian Stann (6-1)
Stann is a former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion. He lost the belt to Steven Cantwell in August of 2008. Soszynski is from TUF Season 8. These guys are former training partners at Team Quest. Stann is currently training with Greg Jackson. If I was a betting man I would put my money on Stann in this fight. Soszynski has a 3.5” reach advantage.
R1- Soszynski got a take down at the two minute mark of the round. Soszynski laid on top of Stann for a minute and a half. Stann got up and Soszynski got another take down. Soszynski went for a kimura and couldn’t get it but went for it again and got it and Stann tapped out. And this is why I’m not a betting man. Nice win for Soszynski. Stann obviously needs some work on his ground game.

This is a feast or famine fight for these guys. The winner is in line for a title shot with another victory and the loser is all but done in the UFC as a legit title contender. Shogun is coming off a lackluster victory over Mark Coleman in what may have been the worst fight of the year. Chuck is coming off of a KO at the hands of current Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans. Chuck Liddell is 39 years old, is this one of the last times we see him in the Octagon?
R1- Shogun got a take down about two and a half minutes into the round and went for a leg lock but couldn’t lock in the submission. Chuck got a take down with a minute left but immediately stood back up. Shogun landed a left hand and jumped on top and the ref stopped the fight! Shogun is back. Chuck looked really old in this fight as once Shogun hit a couple of leg kicks Chuck’s mobility looked slower and more limited. Maybe one more “money” fight for Chuck but besides that I don’t really think he should be fighting anymore.
Winner: Shogun Rua by TKO (Strikes) R1 4:28
Lightweight Fight- Sam Stout (14-5-1) vs. Matt Wiman (10-4)
Wiman is coming off of a Unanimous Decision loss to Jim Miller in December. Stout has a 3” reach advantage in this fight.
R1- Wiman starts off by landing some good strikes and then gets a take down but can’t land anything on the ground. Both guys are swinging freely in this fight. Wiman grabbed a guillotine and tried to pull guard but Stout slipped out and landed in Wiman’s guard. Wiman went for a take down with 30 seconds left in the round but Stout flipped him over. Good first round that was very close.
R2- Wiman tried to take Stout’s back but Stout was able to move into Wiman’s guard. Stout hurt Wiman towards the end of the round but Stout could not finish him and Wiman almost landed an arm bar. Stout really started to pull away here and took this round. I’ve got the fight 19-19 after two rounds.
R3- Wiman took Stout’s back and got him down onto the ground just a minute and a half into the round. Stout eventually rolls out of it and into Wiman’s guard with half the round remaining and Stout lands some Ground and Pound. They stood up and Wiman got another take down with a minute and a half left in the fight. Wiman drew some blood, got another take down and then both guys ended up swinging on their feet. This one is a toss up. I think Wiman’s going to take it as he looked better in the 1st and 2nd. Stout looked better overall but the fight is judges round by round not on the fight as a whole.
Judges score cards say: 29-28 on all score cards in favor of Sam Stout.
I can’t say that I disagree with the decision but it was a very close fight.

UFC Middleweight Title Fight: Anderson Silva © (23-4) vs. Thales Leites (14-1)
Thales is the next contender to try and take away Anderson’s belt. Thales has earned the title shot by winning a controversial decision over Nate Marquardt and by stopping Drew McFedries a little over a minute into the first round on the under card of Silva/Cote. Leites has won 5 straight fights and has won 27% of his fights by arm triangle. Leites is a Jiu Jitsu black belt. Anderson has 8 straight wins which is tied for the most in UFC history but is coming off of a disappointing fight against Patrick Cote. In UFC Anderson has landed 80% of his strikes. Leites comes out to “Welcome to the Jungle”. You have to like that.
R1- One minute into the fight and neither guy has thrown a strike. Two minutes into the fight and not much is going on. Anderson tries to stalk Leites down but he’s more comfortable staying away from Anderson. Leites throws a high kick at the two minute mark that is blocked. Anderson sweeps Leites to the ground with a leg kick. Leites tries to take Anderson down but he’s denied and they clinch. Really slow first round. Anderson takes it 10-9 to the boos of the crowd as he landed the best two shots of the round. Both guys are fighting more of a counter style. Anderson finally started to stalk Leites towards the end of the round when it became apparent that Leites was not going to let Anderson be the counter puncher in this fight.
R2- Leites got a take down early into the round. Anderson got back to his feet at the two minute mark without really taking any damage from Leites. They basically stand around and do nothing for a minute as Leites wants nothing to do with Anderson on his feet. Anderson basically chases Leites around the ring and lands a couple of strikes. Anderson starts to work Leites over with some jabs. Anderson takes this round so he’s up 30-27. Unless Leites somehow wins this fight he might be dropped by UFC after this performance. He’s almost going out of his way to be “unexciting”.
R4- Anderson is landing some front kicks and leg kicks to start this round. Anderson is dancing around this round since Leites doesn’t want to exchange with him. Leites went for a take down and got stuffed. Anderson is winning this fight 40-36. I think Leites would just lay on the ground and sleep if the ref would let him.
R5- Leites actually comes out to fight in this round and Anderson gets on top and gets in a couple of shots. Leites has blood coming from his nose. Anderson hits a couple of strikes and Leites dives to the ground to avoid Anderson. Fans chant “GSP” again during this round. This is probably the most boring title fight I’ve ever seen. Leites just did not want any part of Anderson Silva in this fight. Anderson wins this fight 50-45 in a boring, dominant route. I would be surprised if Thales Leites fights for UFC again after this debacle.

Not a real good show from UFC. The under card was pretty decent but the Main Event just flat out did not deliver.

UFC 93 "Franklin vs Henderson" 1/17/09 Re-Cap
UFC 93: "Franklin vs Henderson"
Welterweight Fight- Marcus Davis (20-5) vs. Chris Lytle (36-16-4)
Looks like we are starting out with the fight on paper that should be FOTN. Davis beat Paul Kelly by submission in his last fight in October at UFC 89 and at the same show Chris Lytle scored a unanimous decision over Paul Taylor. Both guys have professional boxing experience. Lytle is a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Marcus Davis comes out the House of Pain's "Jump Around." Both guys have won the majority of their fights by submission. Davis has a 2" reach advantage. Davis is the overwhelming fan favorite in this fight since he is the "Irish Hand Grenade."
"Ole" chant goes out from the crowd as the fight starts.
R1- Lytle attacks early and briefly knocks Davis back against the cage. Lytle is the aggressor but Davis is hitting some counter punches. Davis caught a kick with two minutes left in the fight and threw Lytle to the ground but didn't follow him down. Lytle went down again, on a possible slip or push, and Davis went down and tried some Ground and Pound but Lytle got back up and then ate a knee. Davis has a cut under his left eye. Good first round and really close to score. Lytle was the aggressor but got knocked off his feet twice. Very close fight so far.
R2- Lytle backed Davis up against the cage and threw bombs to open up the fight but Davis survived. Davis caught him with a body shot that knocked Lytle down. Davis hits a body kick and then some knees. This was a close round. Davis seemed like he hit more shots, Lytle seemed like he hit heavy shots. I think we've got a 19-19 fight here but I could honestly see it legitimately being scored 20-18 right now in favor of either fighter. It's a really close fight so far. Davis has a couple of minor cuts.
R3- Lytle throwing and missing with some wild shots this round. He's still pushing forward but looks like he's slowing. With about a minute and a half left they both throw punches against the cage. Lytle got knocked to his knees at the end of the round. Really good fight. I've got Davis 29-28 but I would be surprised if this wasn't a split decision.

This is Kang's UFC debut. Belcher is coming off of a questionable split decision victory over Ed Herman in September and has won 3 of his last 4 fights. The last time I saw Denis Kang he was getting submitted by Gegard Mousasi in the first round of the DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix tournament. Kang is a Jiu Jitsu Black Belt. Belcher is a Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt.
R1- Kang got an early take down and controlled the action early. Kang got his second take down of the round with two minutes left. Knag went for a kimura but couldn't get it locked in. Really strong round for Kang as he dominated but didn't inflict too much damage on Belcher. 10-9 Kang after one round.
R2- Kang got a take down one and a half minutes into the round. Belcher pulled guard near the end of the round and caught Kang in a guillotine and tapped him. It looked like Kang had run out of gas prior to getting caught. Kang was controlling this fight but not dominating. Very disappointing debut by Kang but I think you could see it coming after he got subbed by Mousasi in very short order last April.
Winner: Alan Belcher by Submission (Guillotine) R2 4:36
Post-fight interview Belcher says he thinks he needs one or two more fights before calling out Anderson Silva. No shit sherlock.
Michael Bisping is shown in the crowd and they hype up the fact that he will be one of the coaches on the next installment of TUF.
Middleweight Fight- Jeremy Horn (88-18-5) vs. Rousimar Palhares (17-2)
Palhares is coming off of a decision loss to Dan Henderson at UFC 88 in a close fight that I scored in favor of Henderson 29-28. Palhares is an aggressive submission fighter and a jiu jitsu black belt. Horn has a 3" reach and 6" height advantage. Horn has over 50 submissions in his MMA career and has fought in over 100 career MMA fights.
R1- Horn pulled guard early but Palhares quickly took his back but Horn survived and was able to roll over. Palhares missed with a leg lock and Horn missed with a triangle. Palhares really controlled and almost dominating first round. This was a borderline 10-8 round in favor of Palhares.
R2- Palhares got a big slam and take down about 15 seconds into round two. Palhares has been warned a couple of times about grabbing onto the cage. Horn survived and got a single leg and then mounted Palhares and got him in an arm triangle but couldn't clamp it in right. Horn hit some stand up but then Palhaes got a take down. Very close first round with Palhares controlling the beginning and end and Horn controlling the middle. I've got Palhares 20-17 so far but I could see it as close as 19-19 depending on what the judges favor when they score.
R3- Huge suplex by Palhares to start off the round. Palhares just controls this round as Palhares was winded but Horn couldn't do anything. Palhares is going to take this by unanimous decision.
Judges say: 30-27 for all three judges.
Winner: Rousimar Palhares by Decision (Unanimous)
Welterweight Fight- Tom Egan vs. John Hathaway
This is a pre-show fight. Egan got a huge response from the crowd. This is the UFC debut of both guys. Hathaway has more experience.
R1- Hathaway dominated on the ground early. The crowd was really behind Egan. Hathaway finished Egan in the final minute of the round due to ref stoppage. Hathaway looked really good. Egan got in virtually no offense.
Winner: John Hathaway by TKO (strikes) R1 4:36
Light Heavyweight Fight- Mark Coleman (15-8) vs. Shogun Rua (16-3)
This is a re-match from their much talked about Pride fight where Rua broke his arm and then their was a post-fight melee in the ring. Coleman comes out to AC/DCs "Back in Black." This is the "Co-Main Event."
R1- Coleman rushes in early and eats a Shogun knee but got the take down. Rua going for a knee bar but Coleman escaped. Rua with a knee but Coleman took him down. Basically this fight is Coleman trying to Ground and Pound and Shogun trying to go for subs. Shogun is starting to come on at the end of the round with some good leg kicks. Coleman looking tired towards the end of the round. Shogun hit a good knee and Coleman dove at his leg. Big left hand from Rua and Coleman crumbles to the floor but grabs onto Rua's leg. Rua 10-9 in this round as Coleman just ran out of gas.
Phil Baroni is in Coleman's corner and telling Coleman that he's hurt Rua badly and that Rua is looking for a way out as Coleman has trouble finding his corner.
R2- Coleman got a take down after he ate a couple of strikes. Rua hitting more strikes and Coleman is having a difficult time keeping his hands up. Coleman got a take down with about 2 minutes left but couldn't hold him down. Rua peppered Coleman with some shots and Coleman got another take down. Rua got a shoulder lock. Both guys look tired. Coleman survives to fight another round if he can make it back to his corner. Rua is up 20-18 but not looking particularly good so far.
R3- Coleman got a take down and is laying on top of Rua. Rua is going after Coleman's leg and Coleman is continually grabbing the cage to help against the move. Coleman back on top and is on Rua's back and is taking some shots. Rua escaped and hit a knee to Coleman where Coleman's knees were on the ground. The ref separated them but on replay it was to the body which was a legal shot. Both guys are just gassed. Rua hitting Coleman with some shots and knocks him down and the ref stops the fight.
That was hard to watch. Both guys clearly didn't have the stamina needed to be ready for this fight. After Rua's interview with Rogan, Rua and Coleman shake hands and embrace a couple of times to squash their feud.
Winner: Shogun Rua by TKO (Strikes) R3 4:36
Light Heavyweight Fight- Rich Franklin (26-3-1) vs. Dan Henderson (23-7)
Henderson defeated Rousimar Palhares by decision at UFC 88 and Franklin's last fight was a win at the same show when he finished Matt Hamill. Henderson is a two-time Olympic wrestler and the only fighter to hold two belts at the same time in Pride. Both of these guys have recent losses to Anderson Silva so they are basically the #2 and #3 fighters in the Middleweight Division but are fighting at Light Heavyweight as Silva has basically forced them to move up. The winner is going to coach opposite of Michael Bisping in the next TUF installment.
R1- Henderson got a couple of good strikes in early, slipped but then got on top of Franklin. Franklin took some punishment but made it back to his feet about half way through the round. They exchanged on their feet as both guys got in shots. Henderson hit Franklin with an accidental headbutt that opened up a cut on his forehead. Henderson up 10-9 after Round One.
R2- Pretty even round but Henderson got a take down at the two minute mark and controlled for the rest of the fight. Henderson is up 20-18 so far so Franklin needs to finish if he wants to get a win.
R3- They mix it up at the beginning of the round with Franklin avoiding a take down but he couldn't avoid a second. Franklin started to land some good shots toward the end of the fight but then Henderson hit him with an eye poke and they had to take a break in the action. Not much action after the eye poke. Henderson takes this 29-28 in a rather boring fight for a Main Event.

Pride Bushido Volume 5 Re-Cap/Thoughts
Pride Fighting Championships Bushido Volume 5

Mauro Ranallo and Baz Rutten are the hosts/announcers of this show. Pride fights are two rounds. The first round is 10 minutes and the second round is 5 minutes. The fights are judged on the entire fight and not on individual rounds so there is no scoring system. Another big difference between Pride and UFC (besides that this takes place in a ring instead of a cage) is that they allow knees to grounded opponents in Pride.
Yasuhito Namekawa vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Rua is 2-0 in Pride and Yasuhito is 1-0 in Pride.
R1- Shogun charges right at him and hits him with a knee. They clinch and Shogun is hitting some knees. Shogun gets a take down into the corner. They get back up but Shogun knocks him down and Shogun is hitting some right hands. Shogun is dominating early. Shogun takes his back but Yasuhito flips over and gets in Shogun’s guard. Shogun quickly gets the fight back under control and is now in Yasuhito’s guard. Shogun gets side control. Yasuhito gets up but then is quickly knocked down and Shogun is just picking him apart. Shogun with kicks and punches. Shogun gets full mount and Yasuhito gives up his back. Shogun gives up the position and gets some nice kicks in and then gets back on top and is hitting some strikes. Shogun is just dominating. Shogun in full mount and again takes the back. Yasuhito’s face is a wreck. Shogun nails Yasuhito with two strong kicks to the face and then a punch and the ref finally ends this one.Shogun just looked awesome here and destroyed his opponent.
Winner: Mauricio “Shogun” Rua by TKO (ref stoppage) R1
Henry “Sentoryu” Miller vs. Mal Foki
Mal Foki has a twin brother that is also a fighter and Mauro interviews them backstage. Baz interviews Miller. This is a Heavyweight Fight. Both guys look really thick. Miller is over 300 pounds. This is Mal’s Pride debut, he is 5-2 overall so far. Miller is 0-1 in Pride fights.
R1- They are swinging early and Foki goes down quickly and this one is over. Sentoryu finished Foki quickly. This fight went about 30 seconds. Miller just hit him with a big right hook and then nailed a couple of punches on the ground and the ref stopped the fight as Foki was basically curled up in the fetal position.Sakuraba is shown at ringside after the fight is over.

Luiz “Buscape” Firmino vs. Masakazu Imanari
Buscape is currently working for the DREAM promotion in Japan (he lost to Kawajiri in the second round of their lightweight tournament). He is 1-0 in Pride fights going into this fight. He’s only 22 years old. This is Imanari’s debut in Pride.
R1- Buscape comes in immediately with a flying knee but it’s ducked and they take this one to the ground early. Imanari almost gets an arm bar early. Buscape is controlling the fight early but not doing a lot of damage. He is getting in some strikes. Buscape gets a choke in but Iminari reverses with an arm bar and Buscape releases. The second half of the round had Buscape dominating in terms of ring control but not doing a whole lot of damage. Buscape definitely in control and winning the fight so far.
R2- Iminari looking to get a leg submission on Buscape but is having trouble getting in position. Buscape gets a nice soccer kick to Iminari’s head. Iminari is trying to get low on Buscape and Buscape is hitting some good leg kicks. Not a tremendously entertaining fight but Buscape looked good.
Winner: Luiz “Buscape” Firmino by Decision (Unanimous)
Ikuhisa Minowa vs. Ryuki Ueyama
R1- Minowa controls the first round as he spends the majority of the round on top of Ryuki and in a dominate position. Ryuki gets a reversal with about two minutes left in the round and he gets some shots in on Minowa but Minowa again gains the dominant position at the end of the round.
R2- Ueyama controls this round as he tries for some submissions but has not been able to finish. Overall, this was a very bland but even fight. Minowa controlled the first round and Ueyama the second. So it’s pretty much Minowa controlling 9 minutes to Ueyama about 6. No one really inflicted much damage on their opponents. Decision will probably go to Minowa.
Winner: Ikuhisa Minowa by Decision (Split)
Heavyweight Fight- Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Shamoji Fujii
R1- Long feeling out process. Fujii tries a take down but Igor stuffs it and delivers some knees. Igor gets the first take down of the fight. Fujii gets a red card for basically being Igor’s punching bag (this means Fujii gets docked 10% of his purse) and the ref stands them back up. Igor knocks Fujii down with a couple of punches and finishes him with a soccer kick. Igor looked great in this fight.
Winner: Igor Vovchanchun by TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes)
Carlos Newton vs. Ryo Chonan
R1- Newton gets an immediate take down. Newton gets full mount and gets some Ground and Pound but Chonan rolls him over. Newton grabs an arm bar but Chonan turns out of the move. Chonan settles the fight down and is in Newton’s guard and is getting in some shots as Newton defends. Newton gets to his feet and Newton tries a take down but Chonan ends up on top. This is a pretty good fight so far. Much more active than the last fight. Newton gets an arm bar and Chonon hangs on and then turns into it and escapes. Great survival by Chonan. Newton sustains full mount but Chonan flips him over and postures up and gets some shots in on Newton. Chonan getting in some good shots and gets full mount. Newton pushes him off and Chonan tries for an arm bar but Newton gets out of the move. Chonan looks real good so far hand he’s got the advantage in the fight so far.
R2- They open up this round with some stand up and Chonan has him against the ropes and is laying into him with punches and knees. Chonan looks like he is going to finish this fight and Newton grabs a knee to try and survive. Chonan with more knees. Newton somehow takes Chonan’s back. The fight is stood up after Newton doesn’t do anything with the advantage. Chonon gets some strikes in on the ropes and hits him with a bunch of shots. Newton crumples to the ground and Chonan takes side control. One minute left in the fight. Chonan with a big knee to the head. Chonan with full mount and gets some Ground and Pound in and the fight ends with Chonan on top and pounding on Newton. Chonan clearly won this fight and looked very good in the process.
Winner: Ryo Chonan by Decision (Unanimous)
Hayato “Mach” Sakurai vs. Crosley Gracie
Sakurai is 2-1 in Pride and this is Gracie’s debut.
R1- They wage a stand up battle at the beginning of the fight with neither guy being dominant but a slight edge to Mach. They go to the ground and Mach controls early but then Gracie gets on top and does some damage. They stand back up and Gracie gets a take down after some back and forth stand up action. Gracie controls on the ground until the bell rings. Gracie won the first round, it will be interesting to see what happens in the second round.
R2- Gracie gets an immediate take down at the beginning of the round. Gracie quickly mounts and is getting in some punches although Mach is defending well. Mach gives up his back and Gracie goes for an arm bar and gets it and gets the tap. Nice move and good showing for Gracie.

Takanori Gomi vs. Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett
This is Bennett’s debut in Pride and Gomi is undefeated in Pride. This is tonight’s Main Event. Bas Rutten says that the fight will not go five minutes with explosive action.
R1- Charles Bennett jumps up on the turnbuckle and sits down for the first 5 seconds of the fight. Both guys swing with some wild shots. Gomi gets a take down and immediately mounts but Bennett escapes. They clinch and Gomi gets another take down. Gomi takes his back but Bennett sprawls out again. They mix it up on their feet. Gomi hits a big shot and then gets a slam take down. Gomi hits a big knee to Bennett’s head. Gomi gets a weird arm bar but releases and Bennett gets a big side suplex on Gomi. They are standing up and Gomi hits some knees and a shot and gets another take down. Gomi mounts again and gets some good shots. Both guys look winded. Gomi gets some Ground and Pound. They reach the five minute mark, so 5 minutes left in the round. Gomi gives up the mount and takes side control and grabs a kimura and it look like Gomi is going to break his arm but Bennett spins out and then finally the ref calls for the bell. Really good fight, definitely the fight of the night. Gomi looked like a champ and Bennett hung in there and had a good showing.

Verdict:
This was a pretty decent show capped off by a good Main Event in Gomi/Bennett. A couple of stand-outs from the show (besides the Main Event) were Shogun Rua, Crosley Gracie and Ryo Chonan.

Mauro Ranallo and Baz Rutten are the hosts/announcers of this show. Pride fights are two rounds. The first round is 10 minutes and the second round is 5 minutes. The fights are judged on the entire fight and not on individual rounds so there is no scoring system. Another big difference between Pride and UFC (besides that this takes place in a ring instead of a cage) is that they allow knees to grounded opponents in Pride.
Yasuhito Namekawa vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua
Rua is 2-0 in Pride and Yasuhito is 1-0 in Pride.
R1- Shogun charges right at him and hits him with a knee. They clinch and Shogun is hitting some knees. Shogun gets a take down into the corner. They get back up but Shogun knocks him down and Shogun is hitting some right hands. Shogun is dominating early. Shogun takes his back but Yasuhito flips over and gets in Shogun’s guard. Shogun quickly gets the fight back under control and is now in Yasuhito’s guard. Shogun gets side control. Yasuhito gets up but then is quickly knocked down and Shogun is just picking him apart. Shogun with kicks and punches. Shogun gets full mount and Yasuhito gives up his back. Shogun gives up the position and gets some nice kicks in and then gets back on top and is hitting some strikes. Shogun is just dominating. Shogun in full mount and again takes the back. Yasuhito’s face is a wreck. Shogun nails Yasuhito with two strong kicks to the face and then a punch and the ref finally ends this one.Shogun just looked awesome here and destroyed his opponent.

Henry “Sentoryu” Miller vs. Mal Foki
Mal Foki has a twin brother that is also a fighter and Mauro interviews them backstage. Baz interviews Miller. This is a Heavyweight Fight. Both guys look really thick. Miller is over 300 pounds. This is Mal’s Pride debut, he is 5-2 overall so far. Miller is 0-1 in Pride fights.
R1- They are swinging early and Foki goes down quickly and this one is over. Sentoryu finished Foki quickly. This fight went about 30 seconds. Miller just hit him with a big right hook and then nailed a couple of punches on the ground and the ref stopped the fight as Foki was basically curled up in the fetal position.Sakuraba is shown at ringside after the fight is over.

Luiz “Buscape” Firmino vs. Masakazu Imanari
Buscape is currently working for the DREAM promotion in Japan (he lost to Kawajiri in the second round of their lightweight tournament). He is 1-0 in Pride fights going into this fight. He’s only 22 years old. This is Imanari’s debut in Pride.
R1- Buscape comes in immediately with a flying knee but it’s ducked and they take this one to the ground early. Imanari almost gets an arm bar early. Buscape is controlling the fight early but not doing a lot of damage. He is getting in some strikes. Buscape gets a choke in but Iminari reverses with an arm bar and Buscape releases. The second half of the round had Buscape dominating in terms of ring control but not doing a whole lot of damage. Buscape definitely in control and winning the fight so far.
R2- Iminari looking to get a leg submission on Buscape but is having trouble getting in position. Buscape gets a nice soccer kick to Iminari’s head. Iminari is trying to get low on Buscape and Buscape is hitting some good leg kicks. Not a tremendously entertaining fight but Buscape looked good.
Winner: Luiz “Buscape” Firmino by Decision (Unanimous)
Ikuhisa Minowa vs. Ryuki Ueyama
R1- Minowa controls the first round as he spends the majority of the round on top of Ryuki and in a dominate position. Ryuki gets a reversal with about two minutes left in the round and he gets some shots in on Minowa but Minowa again gains the dominant position at the end of the round.
R2- Ueyama controls this round as he tries for some submissions but has not been able to finish. Overall, this was a very bland but even fight. Minowa controlled the first round and Ueyama the second. So it’s pretty much Minowa controlling 9 minutes to Ueyama about 6. No one really inflicted much damage on their opponents. Decision will probably go to Minowa.
Winner: Ikuhisa Minowa by Decision (Split)
Heavyweight Fight- Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Shamoji Fujii
R1- Long feeling out process. Fujii tries a take down but Igor stuffs it and delivers some knees. Igor gets the first take down of the fight. Fujii gets a red card for basically being Igor’s punching bag (this means Fujii gets docked 10% of his purse) and the ref stands them back up. Igor knocks Fujii down with a couple of punches and finishes him with a soccer kick. Igor looked great in this fight.
Winner: Igor Vovchanchun by TKO (ref stoppage due to strikes)
Carlos Newton vs. Ryo Chonan
R1- Newton gets an immediate take down. Newton gets full mount and gets some Ground and Pound but Chonan rolls him over. Newton grabs an arm bar but Chonan turns out of the move. Chonan settles the fight down and is in Newton’s guard and is getting in some shots as Newton defends. Newton gets to his feet and Newton tries a take down but Chonan ends up on top. This is a pretty good fight so far. Much more active than the last fight. Newton gets an arm bar and Chonon hangs on and then turns into it and escapes. Great survival by Chonan. Newton sustains full mount but Chonan flips him over and postures up and gets some shots in on Newton. Chonan getting in some good shots and gets full mount. Newton pushes him off and Chonan tries for an arm bar but Newton gets out of the move. Chonan looks real good so far hand he’s got the advantage in the fight so far.
R2- They open up this round with some stand up and Chonan has him against the ropes and is laying into him with punches and knees. Chonan looks like he is going to finish this fight and Newton grabs a knee to try and survive. Chonan with more knees. Newton somehow takes Chonan’s back. The fight is stood up after Newton doesn’t do anything with the advantage. Chonon gets some strikes in on the ropes and hits him with a bunch of shots. Newton crumples to the ground and Chonan takes side control. One minute left in the fight. Chonan with a big knee to the head. Chonan with full mount and gets some Ground and Pound in and the fight ends with Chonan on top and pounding on Newton. Chonan clearly won this fight and looked very good in the process.
Winner: Ryo Chonan by Decision (Unanimous)
Hayato “Mach” Sakurai vs. Crosley Gracie
Sakurai is 2-1 in Pride and this is Gracie’s debut.
R1- They wage a stand up battle at the beginning of the fight with neither guy being dominant but a slight edge to Mach. They go to the ground and Mach controls early but then Gracie gets on top and does some damage. They stand back up and Gracie gets a take down after some back and forth stand up action. Gracie controls on the ground until the bell rings. Gracie won the first round, it will be interesting to see what happens in the second round.

UFC Wired 6/28 Re-Cap
This looks like it could be one of the best episodes of Wired I’ve ever seen as they are hyping Jackson/Griffin so we are getting Jackson/Liddell and Shogun/Griffin tonight. Sweet, I’ve never seen either of these fights and am looking forward to it.
Welterweight Fight- Kyle Bradley (13-4-1) vs. Chris Lytle (34-15-4)- UFC 81- 2/2/08
This was also recently on the UFC Unleashed 6/11 show.
R1- Lytle opens up on him early and is just pounding Bradley and this one is over very quickly. Lytle just overwhelms Bradley. The ref stops the fight and then Bradley pulls guard on the ref. Great stand up by Lytle.
Winner: Chris Lytle by TKO (punches) R1 0:33
Middleweight- Chris Leben (17-4) vs. Alessio Sakara (16-6-1)- UFC 82- 3/1/08
This is from the UFC 82 show.
R1- Both guys swinging pretty freely early. Leben seems to be moving forward and in slight control. They are still throwing pretty good at one another with no one with a clear advantage. Leben continues to move forward on Sakara as they exchange. Sakara gets in a couple of good shots but then eats a knee. Leben with a nice inside leg kick and then body kick. They tie up on the cage but then release. Leben gets in some punches and Sakara is rocked on the cage and Leben is on top of him landing punches and the ref stops the fight. Leben has Sakara's blood on him and is the victor. Leben got in some good punches and then rocked Sakara with 2 punches and then got on top and started punching and the ref stopped the fight.
Winner: Chris Leben via TKO Round 1 (3:16)
Light Heavyweight Fight- Forrest Griffin (14-4) vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (16-2)- UFC 76- 9/22/07
This is Shogun’s UFC debut. Griffin has a 2” height and 3” reach advantage. Griffin gets a really good reaction during introductions.
R1- Forrest shows some good take down defense early and then almost gets caught in an arm bar but escapes. Fans are chanting “Forrest.” Shogun takes Forrest down about a minute into the fight. Forrest does a good job defending in the full guard. Forrest gets stood up and they exchange. Forrest gets a take down. In some of the stand up it almost looks like Shogun has underestimated Forrest and maybe didn’t prepare as well as he should have. Both guys hit some shots and Forrest really connects with Shogun. Shogun gets a take down with about 30 seconds left in the round. Forrest takes Shogun’s back and then gets in his guard. Really good first round. I think Forrest did more damage so he probably took this one 10-9. Really close round though and could have been scored either way I just didn’t see Shogun getting in as much offense.
R2- Forrest gets in a couple of jabs early and Shogun takes him down. Shogun gets in a couple of shots and bloodies Forrest. Forrest gets up and then takes Shogun down. Shogun gets a take down stuffed. Forrest is bleeding on Shogun’s back. Shogun looks like he is out of breath. Shogun gets another take down stuffed. Both guys look really tired right now. Shogun gets stuffed again and Forrest jumps on top. Forrest with some elbows and shots on Shogun. Forrest stole this round as he just dominated the last minute. I’ve got Forrest 20-18 in two really close rounds. Shogun is seriously gassed with Forrest not far behind.
R3- Shogun gets an early take down but gets caught in a triangle but quickly gets out of it and moves to full guard on Forrest. Shogun is getting in some elbows. Shogun tries to posture up and gets caught in an arm submission and then Forrest takes his back. Forrest moves to half guard and is getting in some shots. Forrest gets some uncontested shots in and then Shogun gives up his back. Forrest with knees and punches to the side and Forrest moves back to half guard. Shogun gives up his back with about 30 seconds left. Forrest gets the Rear Naked Choke left and it’s over with 16 seconds left in the fight. Great showing by Forrest. I think this was a combination of Shogun not coming ready to fight and overlooking Forrest and Forrest working really hard during the fight and never quitting.

Light Heavyweight Title Fight: Chuck Liddell © (20-3) vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (26-6)- UFC 71- 5/26/07
I didn’t realize that Rampage is not even 30 yet. That’s interesting. He’s still got a lot of time left it he fights wisely. Rampage gets a mostly heel reaction from the crowd at introductions. Chuck gets a big face pop at introductions.
R1- Rampage kind of stalks Chuck at the beginning with Chuck walking around him. Not much action in the first minute or so. Liddell ducks in and gets a shot in but gets two from Rampage. Chuck went for a left hand jab and he got popped by a Rampage right hand. It looked like Rampage missed at first and Chuck just fell down but on second look he got caught. Rampage jumps on Chuck and the ref stops the fight. Looked like an early stoppage to me at first but when you watch the replay Jackson gets about 3 shots in and on the second one Chuck stops defending. Big time knock out by Rampage.
Winner: Rampage Jackson by KO R1 1:53
